Playa del carmen -first time

Heading to Playa Del Carmen for the first time on Friday. This will be our first time there. Any pointers we should now about? We are staying at Rui Palace and don't plan on doing much. Do we need to worry about exchanging out money to pesos? Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

~ Watch the timeshare sharks in the airport. After you get your luggage, walk straight towards the automatic double doors. This is where you will be approached. Many will offer to take your bags or take you to your transportation. This is not true, all transportation drivers will be on the other side of those doors. Then you're safe.

~DON'T lose the bottom portion of your immigration form. You will need this to leave the country.

~Bring more sunscreen than you think you'll need.

~Tip often if you're receiving good service.

~Either walk into town or take a cab (about 70 pesos).

~You're welcome to use USD, but you will pay slightly more. If you don't plan on buy much in town, I wouldn't worry about exchanging.

~A bubba keg or other thermal mug is great for keeping your drink frosty and sand-free.

~Walk South on the beach to the undeveloped area. It's breathtaking. You can even check out snorkel equipment from Riu and snorkel there.

~Take a kayak out in the ocean. It is soooo much fun!

~Pay close attention to the water conditions. Heed the flag warnings. There is usually a strong undertow when the flags are red.

~Get up early and watch at least ONE sunrise.

~Get to know the staff.

~Have a wonderful time :-) We'll be there on Saturday, just a few resorts South.

How about visiting Playa del Carmen once every night you are there:-)) You can walk into Playa during the day via the beach and during the evening using the sidewalk. Lots of street entertainment along the pedestrian only 5th Avenue. Lots of neat bars and places to catch live entertainment all over town.

I know this is a little thing, but you will need an ink pen on the plane to fill out forms.

Cells phones- you may want to activate international calling.

Good ones, Green. Also, call your bank and credit card company and notify them that you'll be out of the country, so that IF you have to use your cards, you won't be blocked. Bring a credit card (with a high limit, lock in the room safe) just in case you are injured and have to go to the hospital.

Make copies of your passports and keep them seperate from the originals. If you misplace your originals or they get stolen, having copies will speed up the process with the U.S. Consolate, which by the way is right in Playa.

If you go into Playa, you MUST get a churro from the churro cart!

Make sure the men in your group have a long pair of pants and closed toe shoes for the ala carte restaurants at the Riu. They will turn you away without them.

Shirts WITH sleeves (for men, women must have a cover-up over suits) are required in buffets....dinner and breakfast at most resorts. Rius for sure.

Bring back some real Mexican vanilla and/or hand woven blanket.

Bring an extra memory card for your camera, extra batteries too.

Always use your in room safe.

Since this is a windy area, I recommend (for the ladies) to bring a travel size bottle of hair conditioner and a comb. Put it in your beach bag and apply liberally after swimming in the salt water. You'll thank me :)

Shove some zip lock bags and plastic grocery bags in the pockets of your suitcases. Use these to keep your camera or anything else you don't want to get wet and sandy in your beach bag. Then use to transport wet/damp clothes home!

If you have it, throw a roll of duct tape in the suitcase. I've had to use it more than once to repair rips in our suitcases. Lot's of other uses for it too.
