It's a little bit of a hassle to get there, but well worth the effort. Just follow Co_Pilots advice or hire a guide like Yucatreks.

I like your avatar, very Mexican.

Are you interested in renting a car? Very easy to go to Coba. And along the way there is Akumal. Leave early, breakfawst in Tulum if you want then take the Coba road about 45 minutes from Tulum. Can't get lost. There are cenotes along the road too. Do Coba early, then back to Akumal (on your way back to Playa) and spend some time swimming/snorkeling with sea turtles (free) and have a late lunch there.

ISIS Rentadora is a great agent. About $45 usd for day. Two roads from Playa to Coba.

Its not complicated really. A number of first and second class buses make the trip in the mornings with a choice of two afternoon return times. And, as cormac says, renting a car from ISIS is also a great option for flexibility.

You can see the bus schedules here:

We used Yukatreks (referred to us by OT3) because we wanted a private tour to Coba and Tulum on the same day. We did not want to drive in Mexico and also wanted to learn the history of the Myan ruins. It was also a logistics thing too as we wanted to get in and out and go at our own pace when touring these sites. Yukatreks also stopped at a ceramics store in Tulum that I had my eye on too So for us, it was the best money we could of spent. Everyone is different, etc so if you are adventurous and have the time, there are a few on here that have done both ruins on the same day on their own. Whatever you decide, you will love Coba and Tulum. Both are very different in their own ways.

P.S. When you go to Coba, rent one of those tri-cyclos. There is a guy who drives it and you will enjoy the ride. Saves on time and you will get to see more. They are very fun! (Or you could rent bikes there as well). We rode the tri-cyclo and our Yukatreks guide rode a bike beside us and gave us the tour.

Another tip: if you DIY please hire a guide to explain this fabulous extinct citiy. Rates are stiff $40usd/hour or so. Try to hook up with another family/couple to defray. But they can explain wso much that it will "come alive". Then finish tour on you own. 777D . had good ideas also. You really should get an explaination otherwise it's just stone buildings. Find out about the "football" games, see the newspapers, and how the city of some 65000 thrived.
