Renting a cell phone?

Does anyone have any information regarding cell phone rentals in Playa? My daughter will be in Playa for a month attending school. She will need a phone to call home (Canada) a couple of times a week. She will also do alot of texting.

I think adding text to her Telus phone is $70/month, but then we would also have to pay roaming and long distance charges for her calls home.

Any info will be appreciated!

Will she have a computer or smart phone and access to wi-fi? Skype is free and works great.

It's not cheap (understatement of the century) but Telus offer an international travel package - …telus.com/en/…index.shtml

Buy her an iPad. As long as she has access to wifi, you can video call each other as often as you like, and it won't cost you a cent via Skype. Also Skype text message each other, also free. Personally, we love the video calls allowing us to see our loved ones when we're away.

Ditto on the ipad (or smartphone if she already has one)... just turn data off, find a wifi connection and use skype.... it will cost you way less that telus or a rented phone and you will actually get to see her :D

Great recommendations. If she has a smartphone she could also download the free app groove ip lite and make calls for 1 or 2 cents a minute to either Canada or US. You must add money ($10) to a google voice account which if you have a gmail account is simple. I used this option for business during our recent trip and it worked great. There are also several free apps for texting, one of which is text me free. Obviously she would need to be able to connect to wifi but that should be very easy, too. Other option is to use the local shops that offer calls and internet --- they are very inexpensive.

We just used magicjack for our phone calls home from cabo and it worked great. Used our iphone and you needed wifi, but that was it. Download for free and the person you are calling does not need to have it as well. There is an option to recieve calls for free as well, but we didn't need to receive.

IMO an iPad or a smart phone is not a real option unles you have wifi or pay for an expensive data plan there is no way to be connected 24/7. The best option is to buy a new cheap phone from the 7-Eleven stores or Oxxo stores. They are called "Prepago" or pay as you go they range from 20 to 300 USD. (Yes, that cheap) try Movistar "Prepago" they charge $0.06 Mexican pesos per second to call Canada.( 10 minutes = 0.60 Mexican cents or $0.05 dollars) And they can receive calls free of charge anytime anywhere. And on the plus side, they can use the phone to text their friends and as an alarm clock!!
