are vaccinations needed for Mexico? from Ireland but will be travelling from the us to Mexico in May.thanks.
There usually aren't any long term effects for Hep A - you recover and become immune to it. For Hep B, only a small percentage (less than 10%?) develop chronic Hep B, for which you do have to watch your alcohol intake and anything else that can stress the liver. For the large majority of Hep B infected, it is cleared from your system. Hep C is the scary one. IANAD!
That is true about Hep A- I had it as a child at age 9 and am now immune to it.
However, you do NOT want to get it- it's nasty and recovery takes weeks!! The vaccine is a good idea for everyone, even if you never leave your own country. I contracted it here in Canada at my school.
We are from the UK and our GP recommended Typgoid, Hep A and Tetanus. Defo bring mozzie repellent, I've been to Mexico 5 times and each time I've been bitten!
cheers guys.i might speak to my gp to be on the safe side.thanks.
Better safe than sorry
You dont need any vaccinations... you're not going to the Congo or Rwanda... There are no issues of any kind. Mosquitos... that is an issue in any tropical area.
There are no required vaccinations for traveling to Mexico. The CDC recommends Hep A and Typhoid, especially if you are an adventurous eater as they are both diseases you can get from contaminated food or water. I have been visiting Mexico every year for many years and have not been vaccinated for Hep A. Because I was in the Air Force, I received typhoid years ago.
UK based here - got Hep A, and a tetanus booster shot. Couldn't get Typhoid, they were out, but it's optional anyway. Nurse told us - after the shots - that she'd just got back from PDC and hadn't bothered. No one seemed too worried about anything when I said we were visiting the Riviera Maya.
" Because I was in the Air Force, I received typhoid years ago."
Typhoid shots only last about five years.
And Typhoid does not prevent the Hep A virus. Hep A and typhoid are two different things.
They do offer a Hep A and Typhoid combination vaccine though.
