If you don't want to pay just go to Akmul and snorkel there it is very good.

Your hotel is in Playacar and Akumal is like 30 min drive south of Playa, you turn into the main Akumal entrance, it is a white arch then you enter to the left and the dive shop is very visible on the right. If you are driving you can go further left into one of the nicest snorkel parks called Yalku, it is not for free but about 7 us to go in.

The least expensive way of getting to Akumal is through the collectivo busses. 25 pesos per person and they drop you off on the highway about 2 miles from the lagoon itself. There are a few cabs that run the route to the lagoon itself, just need to be patient.

Or you can take the ferry over to Cozumel where some of the world's best snorkeling can be found.

We went to YalKu lagoon, at the end of the road if you take the first Akumal turnoff. It was $8 admission as it's set up as a preserve. We had our own mask and snorkel, but rental shouldn't be much. Lots of fish, sheltered lagoon and a very good time.

To get there you can catch a collectivo - the white vans that run up and down the highway. It costs about $2 from Playa and they're always available. The walk from the highway is about 20 minutes - you could grab a cab.

We also had a great time snorkelling from Tulum. Take the collectivo to the ruins turnoff, walk towards the entrance and then when you get there turn right and walk about 500 yards. There's access to a great, largely deserted stretch of beach. The first dive place is called Kay Op Dive Centre. They do tours to the reef just offshore. We explored two locations, about 40 minutes each, and it was very good snorkelling. Lots of coral, and fish. They have the equipment, and on the day we went we were the only two customers in the board, which was nice. Cost was 150 pesos, about $15.

And for a very cool experience try Dos Ojos cenotes. They're just past the Xel Ha turnoff on the right side of the highway. (Again the van will stop of you tell the driver.) They're limestone caverns, with stalactites and beautiful clear water. Almost no fish, but great looking and very safe and still open to the light. It's a popular site for scuba tours so you can watch their lights flickering in the darker deeper corners of the cave. About $8 to get in, and rental is similar. It's a 20-minute walk from the highway, but a couple picked us up on the way in and a dive tour offered us a lift on the way out.

Hope this helps.

We just got back from there and I would say save your money and do snorkling on your own, we saw stingrays and schools and schools of fish and also a few turtles all by ourselves, we only went on a tour trip to scuba dive, spend your money and do that, it is almost the exact same price, and you will see sooooo much more.

Cozumel is a island not far from Play del Carmen. There is a ferry dock in town and the ferry runs around once an hour. Of course that depends for the time of day.

Though I don't SCUBA dive, I have heard the Cozumel is popular with that crowd. There is a nice area, Chankanaab, that you can snorkel at while visiting Cozumel.
