My wife & I are looking to book the Ocean Maya Royale & Mexico for the very first time with Thomsons when their brochures are released on 24th April, for October 2015, we usually visit the other Caribbean islands for our holidays but have finally given in and decided to give Mexico a try!!!
So, if you don’t mind, here are a few questions that I/we have & hopefully someone will be able to answer for us -
HOTEL/ROOMS - we have a ‘Junior Suite’ booked at the hotel, so we were wondering if anyone could, in their honest opinion, tell us what these rooms are like (if you know of course!) & similarly what would be the best ‘block’ to request for a room with a good view (if these can be allocated with our booking choice) close to the main areas, reception etc but not too close to any noisy areas especially at night?
DREAMLINER FLIGHTS – as we will be booking with Thomson Holidays, we shall be flying the Dreamliner for the first time. Can anyone advise us what these are like compared to a refurbished 747 or the new Airbus planes?
Also we shall be trying the ‘Premium Club’ seat upgrades for the first time & hopefully getting the following seats (there & back) Rows 1 – 6 Seats A C & G J or Row 7 A C. Can anyone advise if these upgrades are worth the extra expense or not & what are these seats like in your opinion?
MONEY/CURRENCY - are US dollars/travellers cheques widely/easily accepted for payment for trips, souvenirs etc and are there money exchange facilities available at the hotel?
Is it better to bring US dollars/travellers cheques from the UK to use in stores or Mexican pesos?
ENTERTAINMENT – in your honest opinion again, what is the ‘day time’ entertainment like & more importantly what is the ‘evening’ entertainment like?
Also, if there are singers at the hotel, are all the songs in Spanish (silly question I know but it’s nice to know what they are singing about – I don’t mind Spanish, just can’t speak it)?
BOOKING A LA CARTE RESTAURANTS – how easy is this to do, where/when do you do it & how often can you use these restaurants ie every night, once a week etc? Is there a ‘dress code’ for these restaurants, if so for which ones (I don’t have any problems sticking to this personally)?
TAXIS AT HOTEL – my wife & I like to get out & about, by ourselves where possible, when on holiday so I was wondering if anyone has used any of the drivers at the hotel at all?
Can anyone recommend a local driver/guide (with contact details if possible) that could possibly take us on a private tour to the ruins at both Tulum & Coba instead of using the tour rep organised stuff (to get a price comparison)
MAYAN RUINS – we are interested in visiting the Mayan ruins of Tulum and/or Coba – can anyone advise which set of ruins are best to visit in respects of closeness to the hotel, how busy they are etc?
Also does anyone know what the entry costs are for each of the sites & also do they charge visitors extra for using video cameras etc (if so how much do they charge)?
TRANSFER TO/FROM AIRPORT – we have booked our usual ‘private transfers’ to & from the hotel – as we won’t have any local currency when we arrive, is it ok to tip the transfer driver in US dollars?
SHOPPING – what is the ‘duty free’ shopping like in the area? Or would it better/cheaper to do this at the airport?
ENTRY/DEPARTURE TAX – is there an ‘entry’ tax for Mexico & if so how much does this cost per adult?
Similarly is there a ‘departure’ tax & how much does this cost?
Would it be better to pay for these in Mexican pesos or US dollars?
HOTEL/RIVIERA MAYA/MEXICO IN GENERAL – we don’t know how many times you guys have been to Mexico/Riviera Maya or Ocean Maya Royale before, so we are going on the presumption that some/most you have been several times & have been to several hotels, so going on that –
1 How do you rate the Ocean Maya Royale to other hotels you have stayed in whilst in Mexico/Riviera Maya ie rooms, food, entertainment etc?
2 Apart from the obligatory days on the beach/by the pool, what places would you recommend for a fairly easy going, early forties, loves the culture of each island, loves to mingle with the locals, Scottish couple to visit/see?
Anyway I think I have bored you all enough with the above so I’ll let you all get on with more important stuff instead of reading this!!!!
Many thanks in advance for any help you can provide
