Snorkel at Paradisus La Perla Beach?

Hubby and I will be staying here August 3-10 for our honeymoon. We are "virgin" snorkelers and would just want to "try it" without a huge tour expense or commitment. Have read the reviews about the rocky, small beach but wondered about snorkeling at La Perla. Any thoughts?

No there wouldn't be good snorkeling in front of La Perla. You can take a collectivo (white air conditioned mini-vans which provide public transportation) from Calle 2 between Avenida 15 & 20 in Playa Del Carmen. For $3-$4 each you can take the collectivo right to Akumal. You tell the driver you want to get off at Akumal. When you get off the collectivo you walk over the highway via pedestrian walkway then just about a 5 minute walk into Akumal Bay. You can rent snorkel equipment here (or better yet see if you can borrow some snorkel masks from friends at home and bring with you). You can snorkel in the bay for free. Go on a day when the water seems very calm in the early morning at La Perla....then you will know that it will be very calm in Akumal Bay. It is very safe to take the collectivo and walk into Akumal Bay...I do this by myself sometimes (female). There are restaurants in Akumal Bay or you could pack a lunch in a soft sided cooler.

jbbr8214...you are welcome...I hope you like snorkeling...it is so easy to do this trip to Akumal on your own...if you booked a "package" to do this they would probably charge you $60 each. BTW if you want to go to Tulum you could also do that in combination with a trip to Akumal. You can take the collectivo all the way to Tulum as well for about $4 and could stop at Akumal on the way back...the collectivo's are great...if you find that you really love snorkeling...your next trip should be to Roatan, Honduras ..it is a really wonderful place for snorkeling right off the shore without having to pay for excursions. Have fun.
