I am writing this review to inform people about all the changes in Tulum. Tulum will have an International Airport in 2010. I have traveled to the Tulum coast since 1991 and the changes are devastating!!!!! Once a playground for the rich looking to get away from it all with a beach cabana, now full of families looking for Mc Donald's and swimming pools pushing down the coast. Tulum and the Reserve are a Turtle Haven. With people and beach chairs the result will be another lost to commercialized condos in less than two years if the owners sell. I beg you not to go with your children unless you have a respect for nature and can go without your cheeseburger and fries. Remember you can't drink the water or brush your teeth with it and it is not fresh water. Middle class people who have no idea please stay in Cancun or Playa del Carmen. Playa del Carmen in 1991 was a wonderful small fishing town with 400 people-now it's 65,000 and growing very ugly with it's bars and fast food, cruise ships, Sam's Club, WalMart, get the picture. Tulum is the last stretch of beautiful beach before the reserve-there is no more. The real Mexico with it's beautiful simple cabanas at $ 35.00 a day in 1991 is now $200 plus. Not a problem for the fashion set who often photograph on the amazing beach. Fat people with a drink in one hand and a cigarette in the other just flick a butt without getting something to place it in. I smoke and always dispose of a filter.
A once beautiful area is now littered with cigarette butts on the beach and plastic trash of all sizes fills the ocean when you swim. Not good for sea turtles.
The best thing you can do is not ever speak of this place and enjoy it.
