Can we use Tulum as a base? How safe is Tulum?

We are thinking of going to Tulum for our next holiday. How safe would we feel in the evening?

Should we hire a car? Is getting around easy? What are the roads like?

How long would it take for us to travel to Playa Del Carmen

Any help would be appreciated

Many thanks

Paula

Very safe. There is one road along the beach - nothing to get confused about and it's paved. Having a car is best.

PDC is about 45 minutes away.

Tulum is very safe. If you don't feel comfortable driving in MX, there are several other options for getting around. Tulum pueblo has an ADO bus station, there are plenty of cabs, and collectivo's go down the main highway to Playa del Carmen for a very inexpensive rate.

Tulum is very safe. We found getting around very easy, the roads are straight and well marked. Just watch out for the topes (speed bumps), they're not always marked. Tulum is about an hour from Playa del Carmen. I would also go snorkeling in Akumal both on the bay and in Yal Kul lagoon while you are there. Tulum is also close to Coba where you can see the ruins, climb the largest temple you can climb in Mexico and go to the cenotes there. The farthest of the three at Coba is the most spectacular, looks just like the photos you see of cenotes.
