What to bring to Tulum and what NOT to bring to Tulum....

Three years of visiting Tulum and I never leave without....

Biodegradable sunscreen

Bug spray (a must if going anywhere around vegetation)

Benadryl, some of the no-see-ums and sand fleas are vicious

A flashlight w/red light (especially when walking on the beach and beach road at night) and RED for spotting turtles on the beach

Lots of 10-20 peso coins for tipping (for some reason it's harder to get change in Tulum, most restaurants will try and round up to avoid giving you small change)

Print-outs of all my confirmations for hotel, car rental, tours

Portable bio-friendly travel detergent, this way I can wash my clothes in a sink and hang them to dry. No more having to pack so many clothes!

Quart and gallon size ziplock bags for toting home dirty clothes, and anything collected on the beach

Hand sanitizer, sometimes there aren't any facilities if going "off the beaten path"

SPF 45 chapstick, nothing worse then burnt lips

Book light, most cabanas have little to no lighting at night

Spray-in hair detangler, for ladies with long hair like me the salt water can wreak havoc on your hair

Bottle opener/corkscrew

What NOT to bring to Tulum....

Perfume, the bugs will eat you alive

Makeup, come on, a little vitamin D makes anyone look good

A general tip if you are doing hand washing - bring an extra couple of gallon zip lock bags for the washing. I toss some clothes with water and detergent in a bag, zip it up and then agitate it all around with my hands for the "wash cycle", then drain the water, wring out the clothes and put them back in the bag, refill with clean water and agitate again for the "rinse cycle". Works great, esspecially with small stuff like swim suits, bras, undies, tanks.

The bottle opener/corkscrew is the best info. Never thought about it my 1st trip but was smart enough to think about at the store buying the beer. Now I leave one in my suitcase all the time.

I always have a package of tissues in my bag for those bathrooms that have run out of t.p.... I've needed them many times!

Leave the watch off. Time will go by (fast too!) Second the TP. Always carry some and baby wipes b/c I do get off the beaten path and restrooms are scarce and, well, sometimes make you not want to use. Some places have folks selling squares of TP outside the loo.

Ziplock bags in many sizes, including the 2 gal. I find a million uses for them, find a new one every trip. I LOVE the washing-machine agitation thing, that's a great way to save water too!

Be careful not to bring the corkscrew in your carryon bag--I've lost a few that way. :-(

Clothespins, or in a pinch (or a hurry while packing), some of those larger binder clips. They come in very handy hanging up bathing suits and such if there's a clothesline--I seem to often see clotheslines but no clips, and it's usually too breezy out to just drape things.

Glad you guys like that tip. It is an old camping trick, but I use it all the time.
