Our problem is that we've travelled a lot, and can't find exactly what we want - fussy, I know! We've stayed in Merida, Cancun and Playa Del Carmen on a holiday 15 years ago, and know it's probably changed a lot. We also spent a lovely week down in Bacalar last year.
We're thinking primarily of Tulum - but would consider ANYWHERE within 4 hours drive or so of Cancun. I keep researching boutique hotels - but wondered if anyone on this forum has direct experience of the area and can either recommend a hidden gem, or reconfirm good views on somewhere popular.
In no particular order, we would preferably like: kid-free (or at least as few as possible); on the beach, really comfy rooms/showers, good food either at the accom or nearby; quiet/peaceful, but with a good bar where we can sit out in the evening and watch the sun go down!
We're more than happy with eco-friendliness, but have gone beyond the age of hammocks and a fan! It's been a really busy period for work and we're looking to relax, with a bit of luxury.
We'd rather not be in a huge hotel - hubby stays regularly in them for work. We don't need night clubs/live music/activities/6 restaurants on site - but we have a good budget, so cost per night isn't too much of a problem; but we don't want to be paying for 'style over substance'!
