Regular grocery store close to San Antonio

We'll be staying in San Antonio. Where would you recommend for shopping that has a "nicer" assortment of goods? We'll need just regular supplies but would also like to be able to find some little more upscale ready-to -eat type things maybe. And, we'll want to buy some wine and beer. I think what we'd prefer is to find a standard but nice supermarket (Mega or Soriana) to get our initial supplies and then perhaps if there are smaller, more specialized places we could just pick up a few things we'd like to know about those too. We can always walk to the supermarket and then take a cab back if the walk there isn't more than a mile or two.

Thanks.

Best places for specialist goods in your area are Luna de Queso and Maple (for bread), side by side on Ancha S Antonio. Wines and some deli stuff at Europea just down from the Jardín. I do most of my daily shopping at the family run supermarket, Bonanza, on Mesones (it has a good selection of specialist stuff) as well as the nearby grocers and butchers. There is the organic market every Saturday morning just along from the Instituto.

Thanks much! So, these are better options than making a trek to one of the massive chain stores?

Mega has the best selection of the larger stores and is closest to San Antonio. You certainly might want to stock up there with some necessities: there are always cabs stationed outside to get you home.

When we're in San Antonio we walk to. Mega with stops en route at Luna de quesa and maple bakery...shop at mega and get taxi home. We buy our booze at Europa in centro - better selection and cheaper than mega.

Depending on where you are in San Antonio the San Juan de Dios Market may be a good option for fruits, veggies and flowers. There are also several locals for rotisserie chicken around the market.
