Need current recommendations on driving to SMA from US east

All the threads I found are fairly old. We will be driving to SMA early in 2014 from Virginia and are looking for more current information. Google Maps has us crossing at Nuevo Laredo then through Monterrey. Any other suggestions?

Follow Google maps recommendations, in the last few days a few more military checkpoints have been added south of the Reynosa and Matamoros crossing ....but who knows what the problems will be in 2014........

Colombia bridge will be the least congested crossing, but out of the way if you start from Laredo in the morning. Laredo to SMA of course is about 10-12 hours depending on checkpoints and your speed. All the hotels between San Antonio and Laredo are incredibly expensive these days due to the fracking activity, so that may affect your decision on where and when to cross. Either way, the drive around Monterrey is easy if you keep your eyes open for where you need to turn. Stay on the cuotas. In Texas, if you come down through Austin, do yourself a favor and take the toll road that bypasses Austin. NO traffic and you can drive 80. If you do, you may want to buy a TXTAG, but you can auto bill as well.
