Planning first visit for Feb 2011 need advice

We belong to ILX, we're going to try this resort just after the first of the year, from what we've read we realizes this more rural, not a "resort" town, but friendly and relaxing. Wondering from the hotel is it with in walking distance to markets, bars, restaurants, or is a car or taxi a must??? Any suggestions as to where to eat/drink away from the hotel? We adore Mexico and are looking forward to giving this location withour time share a try, any info is appreciated. Thanks.

San Carlos is a pretty sleepy little town so not much going on. Don't know where your 'resort' is but hopefully its not the Paradisio. Most of the bigger properties are away from downtown so a cab or car would be needed. Why don't you ask where your hotel is in relation to the 'marina'. If its close then your close to a bus line and lots of choices.

The Premiere Vacation Club is a 5 - 10 minute drive from the main area of town. It is close to the San Carlos Plaza Hotel (short walk down the beach) -- which has several restaurants. It's a little pricey. The Palapa has good, reasonably priced guacamole and chips and quesadillas.

Further down the beach -- or short drive down the road -- is the Hang Out / Soggy Peso. This is a fun beach bar serving excellent crab tostados, guacamole, sandwiches, cold beer, etc. There is often live music.

And past the Hang Out, also on the beach, is Bonifacio's -- a new restaurant. Everything is good here -- I particularly like the Surf & Turf Brochette. They also have nightly live music.

Both these places are perfect for watching the sun go down. And the beach here is soft sand with nice snorkel spots just off shore.

There are also many nice restaurants and taco stands in town.

It can be very chilly during the winter months. We were there the first week in January and froze. We also use the priemer vacation club and love it. It is not the ritz but it has its charm and it is secluded. My husband loves it. The first time we were there we used taxis now we rent a car in Tucson and drive down. The taxi driver would drop you off and ask you what time you wanted him to come back and would give you his cell #. They don't get a lot of business.

This is one of our favorite places to relax.

We are going to stay at the marina fiesta resort to be with family who is having a medical procedure done in November 2010 and was wondering about this resort for wheelchair access etc. And the amenities. And the food. And especially the noise. Partying and the constructioning going on. Also read about giant roaches. Thank you

We've been keeping an eye on the warnings, from what we've been reading this area isn't in any danger. sounds like the most trouble is drug lord related and closer to mexico city and other cities more in the middle of the country. Hope not to have to cancel this wonderful vacation, it's not just mexico that could possibly be dangerous, lot of cities have their share of troubles. but thanks for bringing the warning to my attention.

The route from Tuscon to Hermosillo to San Carlos has been free of incidents. The main caution is to drive in the daytime only.

Planning our first visit to PVC at christmas. Trying to decide whether to bus from Tucson or rent a car. Rental rates seem to double for the mexican insurance that's required. Any thoughts?
