Canada or USA?

Hi

My husband and I have finally made the big decision to go overseas next year. We will roughly have 7-8 weeks up our sleeve.

Trouble is confusion has now set in. Should we spend majority in Canada and some in USA or vice versa. We are coming from Australia and have to admit the only knowledge we have on the USA is what we have seen on telly. Any ideas greatly appreciated

as I think we are trying to fit too much in

Relatives from Perth came a few years ago and decided to try and see both Canada and the US but limited themselves to the Eastern part of both countries----Florida, South Carolina, New York, Toronto, Montreal and the Maritimes. That would work well for Western Canada and the States too, and with your flights, would probably be easier to plan.

If I could only choose one area of Canada to see it would definitely be British Columbia, Alberta and the Rockies though the rest of Canada is quite beautiful. Your time frame of 7-8 weeks should allow you to do a very good tour coast to coast of either country.

Maybe do some browsing through the travel section of the library or online frommers.com or fodors.com to get an idea of what sort of holiday you would like it to be---cities, countryside, B&B's, ocean, mountains....the possibilities are endless!

Greetings From Western Canada!!

First of I would recomended seeing BC and the Alberta rockies as they beautiful. There is nothing else like them. What I would do would be to fly to Victoria and tour the island as it is amazing. Then I would fly to Vancouver (From victoria), rent a car and drive through BC, banff, Canmore, Kananaskis, and Calgary.

At Calgary I would fly to Ottawa and rent another Car. Then I would drive through Quebec to New Brunswick. Spend a couple days there and then drive to Nova scotia. Go to Halifax then drive to Sydney (Nova Scotia). From there I would take a ferry to Newfoundland and tour there for a couple days. Then come back to Sydney and drive to Prince Edward Island tour there for a couple days.

Then I would drive through the States down the East coast through Maine, New York, Virginia, Florida. Tour there for a couple days and then Fly to Denver, Colorado and drive through, Colorado, New Mexico, (Or Utah depending if you like mountains of desert better. Utah has mountains and New Mexico is desert), Arizona, Nevada, California, To San Fransisco. Then I would fly back to Australia.

Here are some websites I would visit:

http://www.travelnewbrunswick.com

http://www.bbcanada.com

Also I would come in the summer as in Canada it gets very cold in the winter!!

8 weeks is not quite enough to know one region well, yet long enough to do a little more than an introductory course of N America. So I think that you have to pick a region or theme which you like to have a deeper understanding.

I propose to give 4 weeks to Canada and 4 weeks to the States. Canada is easier for Australians to adjust to, and have a less hectic pace, hence less aggressive. So start here. You need a car in N America. And for great distances, use cruise control. If you worry about driving on different side of the road, just think you are driving on a one-way lane. That is how I drive in other countries.

Well, spent 2 weeks in western Canada (Rockies and Prairies) and another 2 in the east, preferably late Sept to catch the Fall colours. You will find recommendations under other topics in this forum. Then move south and spend a week in Boston and New York. In the next week, you have to choose from going south to Florida or west to Chicago, through Philadelphia and Washington DC. The southern route will go onto New Orleans, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona for the great vista of natural wonders before hitting Las Vegas. The route through Chicago will go through midwest to Black Hills and Yellowstone/Grand Teuton, then turn south to follow the Colorado Canyonlands to Las Vegas. The final week would be spent on #101 along the Pacific coast back to Vancouver. Driving through the Prairies is a little less boring than driving through the Great Australian Desert. You may like to fly over part of it esp on the US side, and save some time.

The circular route as suggested is demanding, now you have to pick out which to skip.

What months of the year will your trip be? If it is Aussie summer then it will be winter in North America so might restrict travel in some areas.

Hello, Again.

I like bofoster's idea of spening 2 weeks in western Canada, then 2 weeks in eastern Canada. As far as the states I have never been there but I would advise going on the north route.
