While the US dollar is accepted, you will get a horrible rate from almost all businesses as they capitalize on the convenience of your use of the US dollar. So basically you will need some Canadian money, but you could likely just take it out at the bank machines or use credit card for most purchases.

At the moment any US money would likely be accepted at par from most businesses seeing as it's less than $1.04 Canadian today. You'd be best to keep an eye on the exchange as they keep predicting parity and if the CDN goes at par or over the US it will cost you having US.

Hi Morrowz,

Two very different countries... two very different currencies.

You'll want to take a look at the FAQ Section (see the box to the right of this screen) and the Question entitled "What Should I Know About Using Canadian Currency".

Cheers!

Also keep in mind that even though you give the merchant US money, all your change will be in Canadian. If you are thinking in terms of purchasing foreign cash before you leave home, then you could just bring US with you and then change some into cdn while you are here.

Coins are pretty much interchangable. They are pretty similar in size and denomination, so you'll find coins from both currencies circulating in both countries.

The reverse is also true. You shouldn't have any trouble spending CDN dollars in the border US communities, but again, the exchange rate will be worse at a merchant than at a bank and your change will be in the local currency.

Hmmm, this might be the case on the West Coast of Canada... BUT certainly NOT the case in Eastern Canada. There is no where that I know of on the US side of the border that accepts Canadian Currency with welcome arms (not even loose change)... One will be politely told "Sorry, American Currency ONLY".

I say this because the Traveller has stated they will be making their way to both Eastern Canada and NY.

Cheers!

Hi;

I have to agree with Wine-4-2 about the eastern side. I had a merchant in Buffalo, just across the border, refuse to accept a Canadian penny !

Best Regards

Agree with Wine-4-2 about the coins. Also, if you try to use American coins in any Canadian vending machines they almost always won't work.

The other thing is, is you get American currency at home then try to change that to Canadian you are doing exchange twice. Just go to an ATM in Canada and get some Canadian cash. Then do the same in the US.

Hi Morrowz,

Agree with ISLANDWEST, American Change WILL NOT work in Canadian vending machines (and parking meters etc) because of the difference of make-up (metal composition). Therefore weight and magnetism is different, and machines can recognize the difference. Plus a lot of Canadian machines accept (or only accept) Canadian Loonies & Twoonies.

Cheers!
