Atlantic Canada

I am planning to take a road trip in Atlantic Canada (2-3 weeks).

Would like to see as much as possible. :-)

Starting in Toronto and driving east through Montreal and Quebec City (love that place). Would appreciate any suggestions/ advice where to stop, what to see. (Hotel/ B&Bs suggestions are welcome as well). We are very flexible and like light hiking, amazing scenery.

Open to suggestions/ recommendations.

Thanks

Hi Youliar,

Welcome to the CANADA TRAVEL FORUM

And I see that you are NEW to the TA FORUMS… so a BIG Welcome Aboard as well !!

If you are driving, in the end you’ll be spending a fair amount of time just getting to and from The Maritimes (something to be aware of). Toronto to Saint John NB for example is aprox 1457 Kms (and about 16-1/2 Hours of Driving Time*)

GOOGLE MAPS (Toronto to Saint John NB) = http://g.co/maps/paze8

*NOTE – Driving time is just that… time spent driving. It doesn’t account for Stops, Breaks or Sightseeing… nor for Delays caused by things like Traffic Congestion, Road Construction or Weather Conditions (or Border Crossings or Ferry Waits if you choose to use either of those options in your journey). It is estimated using GOOGLE MAPS for the shortest most direct route (unless otherwise noted)… and driving under ideal conditions at the posted speed limits.

The above route, is all in Canada… you could just as easily take a route thru the USA as well (or come back that way for a change of pace). Overall timing and distances is about the same... in the map link above, click on the other SUGGESTED ROUTES to see them.

Our fave following a vacation in 2010 now though is to cut thru Maine, make our way to Lubec (the Easternmost point in the Continental USA)… and then take the bridge to NB and make our way thru the NB Islands (Campabello – Deer Island)

GOOGLE MAPS (Lubec Maine to Saint John NB) = http://g.co/maps/5yuy2

So that is your first decision… what route do you plan to take to get there and back…

After that… you can post your “specific” Questions in the more relative DESTINATION FORUMS where you can tap-in to the Local Advisors & DEs who can help you out with the details on where to visit, spend the night etc…(ie MONTREALQUEBEC CITY – NEW BRUNSICK … or VERMONTNEW HAMPSHIRE – MAINE etc)

Hope this is helpful,

Cheers!

Thanks Wine-4-2. You are definiitley right that it is a lot of driving...

We thought of flying but then you miss out on Montreal & Quebec City (did I mention that I love that place). we are still debating flying vs. driving, price is a factor as well - there are 5 of us.

Thanks for the links and the sugestions

Hi Youliar,

You are very welcome... glad to help

With 5 of you, flying will end up being quite expensive... driving will be much cheaper... but will certainly eat up your vacation time... flying you can be Toronto to Halifax in around 2 Hours flytime (plus anytime you lose or gain for the time change... we being EDT and they ADT right now)

You might want to watch Porter Air... they often have great seat sales... even as high as 50% off sometimes

With 3 Weeks Vacation... it is very doable by car (2 weeks is tight with you coming from Toronto...). Three means you'll have more time you can explore... either along the way, or in The Maritimes once you get there... one could truly spend a week or two in each of the three Provinces on their own (they look small... but have a lot of land to cover... and TONS to see).

We did a 10 Day trip back in 2010... but Mr Wine & I were very focussed on what it was we wanted to do with our limited amount of time (that trip was NB Islands - Bay of Fundy - Acadians - and Wine) and in our case, we have both visited many many times before (although most trips were for Biz and so centred in one area like Halifax). For us dedicated road-trippers exploring farther afield with no kids (or clients) in tow was pure joy !!

You can read my Trip Report here *Trip Report - The Maritimes (July 2010)* = tripadvisor.ca/…27692947

NOTE - for whatever reason, the above link picks up at Reply # 1 (Reflective Comments)... so you'll have to scroll up to see the full report from the beginning

BTW, if you LOVE Quebec, you'll no doubt like Halifax too (similar but different... ie their Citadels, the hillside location, the harbour etc). And there is lots of history in The Maritimes too... (Louisbourg - Fort Ste Anne / Annapolis Royal - Martello Towers in Halifax and Saint John - the Acadians etc)

Not to mention the fabulous scenery, ocean air, and AMAZING Seafood !!

It will be a great vacation... enjoy!

Cheers!
