Best areas to see the autumn Fall colours.

Although I appreciate that weather etc is a factor on when the colours change I would appreciate advice on some of the best areas to see them.

At the moment, my plans are to visit the Canadian Rockies and the Niagara Falls during September so I am fairly flexible as to which scenic area/areas to visit.

Thanks.

September is likely too early to see the really nice fall colours in Southern Ontario. Best colours are usually in October and typically at their height towards the middle of the month.

Hi

The multi coloured falls colours are mainly found an Eastern Canada.

The West does not have any of the maple trees species that create these vibrant colours.

Thanks for your quick responses.

Can you suggest any particular places or areas in Eastern Canada where the autumnal colours are really special and worth visiting?

Sault Ste Marie is where many of the Group of Seven did their paintings. The Agawa Canyon train trip is supposed to be spectacular.

A few points:

- Now that you're narrowing down your destinations, perhaps continue your questions in the forums for those areas, rather than in the Canada forum, since few people read the Canada forum and those that do see all the threads from all the Canadian destination forums, so it's hard to keep your topic on the first page for long.

- Central/Eastern Canada, including Ontario and Quebec, get more colourful in the fall than the Rockies, since our forests here are predominantly hardwoods (with sugar maple becoming the brightest red) while forests in the mountains are mainly evergreen.

- September is a bit early for fall colours. However, colours in Algonquin Provincial Park tend to peak earlier than in other areas of south/central Ontario, often by late September. Algonquin Park is about a 4 hour drive from Niagara Falls.

- Agawa Canyon as suggested above might also have earlier colours given how far north it is, but might not be practical as a side trip from Niagara Falls (9 to 10 hours driving time, or another flight).

- If you are visiting both the Rockies and Ontario as you say (and you appreciate that it's at least a 4 hour flight between the two), you should go to the Rockies first, in earlier September when it's still somewhat warm there, and Ontario in later september when there's a better chance of fall colours.

The Rockies' attractions and some accommodations will be closing up for the winter some time between the end of Sept and mid Oct.
