Safety

Has anyone had any issues with safety in Ixtapa recently? I was there back in 2000 and see on the homeland security that there are a few concerns. Looking to head there this spring!

Thanks!

What are these alleged concerns that you saw? HS mentions some remote areas of the state of Guerro in which Ixtapa is located. Also, HS is having a conference in Los Angeles and there is some kind of activity taking place at the Ixtapa Cantina.

Come on down...use the same caution as you would in any U.S. city or actually anywhere....

Wisconsin had 173 murders in 2012. 71 us citizens in 2012 for the entire country of mexico. You WILL be safer than at home.

Cheers!

Guerrero IS one of the states that sees quite a lot of cartel activity. This is a fact.

But if you are a tourist and you follow common sense safety rules, like those you would follow anywhere including at home (assuming you have common sense, of course! :) ) then you will be fine in Ixtapa/Zihua.

Far more likely than any sort of random violence are things like you may suffer in any hot 'sea and sand' destination- sunburn, heatstroke, hangover, risk of drowning, traffic accidents....also be very careful when you are walking, twisted ankles are common, the sidewalks are not always in great shape and lighting at night can be poor- and watch when you are crossing the street!

come down and enjoy!

Did you say you were concerned about a statement from 2000? That's over 13 years ago? At the least, that information would now be irrelevant. Good comments made above by my fellow TA posters. We live here- have never felt less than safe.

Its very safe here as its a tourist city. Hardly any crime at all. Safer than most cities in the US or Canada. The police presence is good here and they carry their machine guns on the street for our protection.
