Hotels: Which are not AIs only?

We are hoping to return to Ixtapa this winter after a several year absence but would prefer not to go the AI route. Nothing against those who do, but we like to get off property in the evening. Years ago we stayed at the Barcelo (then the Sheraton) but it now appears to be AI only. Same with Park Royal, Inter Continental Presidente, Tesoro, Sunscape Dorado, Qualton and Azul. And it looks like Krystal, Emporio, Las Brisas and Posada are only ones that have a non-AI option if you want to stay on the beach and can't afford Capella. Is that correct? Thank you.

We are to going to the area for the first time in June. We also do not want to go the AI route. For us it came down to Las Brisas in Ixtapa and Brisas del Mar in Zihuatenejo. We have made reservations for Brisas del Mar mainly because it is within walking distance to many things. Both places get good reviews. I will post a review when we return.

Your list is correct. We stayed at the Krystal in March and it was a fine option. What you looking for in a hotel? Las Brisas is a bit more upscale and private. The Emporio appears to be nice but no balconies and no activities. You could also consider renting a condo at one of the BVG properties. Or stay in Zihua.

EasternWashington93,

O57 has it nailed for you.

We used to be locked into the Dorado before AMResorts turned it into it's current state. We switched back to Las Brisas in March and really enjoyed the views from the Junior Suite. And as I said in my review, they're room service has been the best in the area if you are vacationers that would use same.

There is also the Hotel Fontan which can be had either with or without A/I. Or rent a condo at the Tesoro or Amara or Bayview Grand.

If you don't like AI's and are looking for a more authentic treat you should go to Zihuatanejo not Ixtapa. There are a lot of boutique hotels that are great and it's easy to get around. Quinta Troppo is a great choice or Brisas del Mar. Personally I'd stay at Quinta Troppo.
