nasty fish in cenotes????

Hi we are booked to stay at the CAT in July and I was looking forward to snorkeling in the cenotes when my hubby and teenage son said there was no way they were gonna risk some nasty fish swimming into their privates!!!

could anyone put their mind at rest as to what type of fish you expect to find there? think they have seen too many nature programmes!!! they seem to think only woman would venture in? lol....

any help to change their minds would be appreciated. cheers!!!

Well, I think (hope) they are pulling your chain. However, in case they are serious, the fish are very small and will stay away from them. We have been traveling to the Yuicatan for 14 years and never heard of of anyone having any problems with fish in a cenote. Are they afraid of getting in the ocean for the same reason? Now, on the off chance they go swimming in the nude, and the part in question is so small it is the size of a tiny worm, well maybe ... :0)

Hi no they are really serious!!! they saw a tv programme where some tiny fish swam down there...(u kno where) and this guy was in serious pain, cannot remember how they got it out, well its stayed in their memories (quite understandably) and they think it might happen to them!!!! the sea is fine, these fish only live in fresh water.... I told them to wear a protective! and I wasnt kidding, but they wont take a chance, I'm sure these fish in question were from somewhere like the Amazon...

any feedback on these critters!!

thanks for your help

Ahhh was this an episode of Grey's Anatomy? This is a fictional program. I just watched that episode.

The fish your husband and son are refering to is called a Candiru or Canaro (Vandellia cirrhosa). It lives in the Amazon River. It is attracted to urine or blood. It does not live in the cenotes of Mexico. Tell your husband and son to keep their shorts on when they are in the Amazon and they will be fine.

If only this were an urban myth. I still can't stop cringing.

<img src="http://www.bofads.com/pictures/candiru.jpg">

But yes, it seems that it's only indigenous to the amazon river basement. But still, a pair of speedos underneath regular swimtrunks might be a good investment if for no other reason than to put an irrational fear at ease.

I have heard about that. I think Oprah had Dr. Oz talk about it, so maybe go on her website and do a search about that. I remember Oprah and Dr. Oz used a clip from Grey's Anatomy to discuss it. That kind of fish is in the Amazon, so tell your guys to relax and take advantage of the beautiful snorkeling experiences they will have.

Hi just googled it and found a video on youtube and yes really nasty but only found in Amazon, thankfully!!!

I betta pack em some speedo's then, good idea, just to stop em fretting......but apparently women can get it just the same....!!!!

thanks for your input.

still cant wait to go.....
