Money

Does anyone know what currency they prefer at the Catalonia Yucatan Beach Resort & Spa.

Do they prefer Canadian , American or Pesos.

Can we exchange money there or is better to get it at home in Canada before we leave.

We exchange to pesos here in Canada before we leave. Rate is better than exchanging in Mexico and saves the double exchange by exchanging to American first. You could always bring some American as well as it is widely accepted in the area, but not sure about the Catalonia Yucatan specifically.

Just returned last Mon...

They DO NOT accept any US cash at any of the resort shops, room upgrades, spa, etc. The resort prefers that you use Credit Cards for that sort of thing there. You CAN still tip in US cash though. Oh & another thing, they won’t take any coins other than MXN pesos. They can’t exchange them down there.

We did find it tough to get small MXN denominations for tips, so take as many 20 peso notes that you can get ($1.64620 Cdn, right now, http://tinyurl.com/4nkk4na )

Hope this helps….

Went first week in January and took both pesos and US dollars. Only used pesos for tipping but they take both. We upgraded rooms and were able to pay in either currencies. Went into Playa Del Carmen and taxis and stores are still taking both.

US dollars are still widely accepted in the tourist areas although, as BC IT Guy has observed, there are some exceptions.

The thing is, since you're coming from Canada, I suspect you have to do a currency exchange anyway - if that's the case, then skip the US greenbacks and go straight to pesos; your money will go further.
