We spent a week at the RIU in June last year, had great time. Our trip was centered around lounging at the pool or beach and playing the great golf courses around. The only other excursion we did was a half day in Bucerias. Its a great shopping town thats a $5 cab ride away. If you want tons of info on Bucerias put up a post on that and many will respond.

We were at the Riu in February and did not go on the pirate ship cruise but saw it as we were in Puerto Vallarta on the Malecon. There were fireworks shot from the ship at the end of what looked like some kind of entertainment on the ship. We did not do any side tours, just went into Puerto Vallarta twice, once by bus and once by cab. The bus ride was fun. One bus takes you as far as the cruise ship area and Wal Mart is just across the street, so we had to stop in and compare prices. Then the second bus takes you into downtown. It gives you a feel for the city and the people, who were very friendly and courteous. We also went to Bucerias and took the cab there, although if it had been my decision, I would have walked the beach to get there. It would be about a 1/2 hour walk.

How far was the bus ride from RIU to downtown? And was it expensive? How about the cabs? We are going in early June and want to be able to tour downtown but want to do it on our own and don't want to be stranded at resort if it is really far.

thanks.

The bus took around 45 minutes and was actually 2 busses. One goes as far as WalMart for $1.50 and then the one to downtown picks you up (it says Centro) was .50. The cab was $18. Of course, these prices are one way, so multiply times 2.

We were at the RIU in January (and enjoyed it thoroughly). The bus ride is as described above - and it was worth it as an experience on its own.

Things we did and loved:

1. Sailboat to Yelapa. This was through Vallarta Adventures. Pretty well anything they do looks great. From N.v. you take one boat into P.V. and then another to Yelapa. There is snorkeling en route, and we saw whales and rays. Great crew, lots of fun, good salsa, beer and other drinks.

2. Canopy Tour. Also through Vallarta Adventures. Don't expext to see any wildlife. But this is very fun nonerheless. The staff are great, and the drive there is interesting as well.

3. Walk through P.V. A great old city with lots to see. Check out the artisan's shops on the island in the "old" area - at the south end of the city.

4. Hang out on the beach - and walk up and down.

The bus ride is an experienc e you will not forget. Our Bus (doors open) was racing with another bus to get into a very narrow street.

We stayed at the Riu Vallarta and the beach there and the Jalisco are the same. The water is not blue like on the Carribean side it kinda brown. The did have some jelly fish but the water was warm and the beach was great.
