exchanging money

We are going to Mexico in Jan. with our kids and my mother. We were wondering where and if we should exchange our money. We are from Toronto and we were thinking of changing some to US funds and the majority to Visa travellers cheques. Is that the best way? Do they exchange money at the front desk of the hotel or should we go to a bank? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

imo - the absolute best way is to use the ATM. There is one at the airport which can get you started with $. Also, on this forum those from canada have been advised against changing their money to US - really no point in doing so. If you are staying right in PV there are lots of casa de cambios around as well as many banks and ATM machines (I believe Scotiabank is a canadian affiliate). Travelers cheques can be a bit problematic, especially if you are looking to purchase items in the flea market or from beach vendors, but are perfectly fine if you want to cash them in at a casa de cambio or bank or use at some of the established businesses or restaurants.
