Memorial Day weekend trip to Banff

I am planning a 6 day trip to Banff, Jasper with my extended family (we'll have 4 kids) around May 22nd. How's the weather at this time of the year? Will it be too cold/rainy?

Hard to predict the weather for sure, of course - the best I can do is steer you to Environment Canada's historic climate information for May & June:

As you can see, the daytime highs are still fairly cool (around +15C to +18C), although you can get some really hot days or some cold ones. May and June are fairly rainy months on average, but generally the rain takes the form of showers; nothing like the rain you get in Seattle, I'm sure.

In the mountains, late May is early-ish spring. The high mountain lakes (e.g. Lake Louise, Moraine Lake) will still be thawing, while lakes at lower elevations (Vermilion Lakes, Lake Minnewanka) should be open or mostly open. There will be snow at the higher elevations; most hiking trails don't open until July (and this year, given current weather patterns, it might not even be until the first or second week of July). Again, the exceptions would be the trails in the valley bottoms and lower elevations.

The Icefields Parkway from Lake Louise to Jasper shouldn't pose any real problems aside from snowy shoulders and frozen lakes; the Sno-coach ride on the glacier will be operating, if that interests you. For more about this scenic roadway, check out this TripAdvisor Traveler Article:

Expect lousy weather. And expect it to be cold. If you get lucky, it may be passable and unpleasant, rather than awful.

Or it could be hot and sunny, with blue skies from one mountain peak to the other -- the Victoria Day weekend, which sometimes coincides with the Americans' Memorial Day, has been the occasion for some of the loveliest day hikes that we've had over the years. Come prepared for the worst, then if you get the best, it will be a bonus.

So that pretty much summarizes the weather! Come prepared for anything (including snow!), but the temperature averages are usually 15-17 celsius. A trip to Banff any time of year is worthwhile and the scenery is always the same: stunning and unforgettable. Make sure everyone has some comfy walking shoes as this is one of the best things to do to enjoy the town and the sights.
