Clothing in August

We will be spending two weeks in Banff / Yoho area travelling by car and taking short hikes. We would like to visit icefield parkway and see the glacier. I guess no one can be sure of the weather, but are we likely to need winter clothing, eg down jackets, thermal underware and so on?

Also I saw a reference to bug shirts and hats. What are these, are they effective and where do you buy them?

Hi paul611 ~

In the Top Questions to the right you will find, in second place, an article about weather.

The temperatures can dip close to freezing overnight. But during the day it can be warm to hot. Layers of medium weight clothing would allow you to easily get cooler or warmer as need be.

The weather in Banff can change dramatically and quickly, so on a day that starts off in shorts and a T-shirt could require you to suddenly need a heavy sweater and tuque. Snow in August in the higher elevations is part of the fun, so be prepared. When you are close to a glacier, it will be winter, and the fierce wind coming down from the glacier will chill you to the bone. But a 15 minute hike away from the glacier gets you back to summer, so you should be ready for all eventualities. If you are camping, thermal underwear is a good idea.

If you are just walking the trail to the toe of the glacier, or going on the mechanized glacier experience with Brewster, you will just need long pants, a warm sweater and windbreaker, hat and gloves, nothing extraordinary. Many people do those two things in normal summer touring wear. If you are going on the Icewalk (a 3-hour hike on the glacier), then you need warmer clothing. Their website has suggestions www.icewalks.com

This TA page on clothing should be helpful:

This is what bug gear looks like:

You are not going to need it in August for what you are doing.
