Fees for XC skiing in Banff?

Must we pay a fee to XC ski in the Banff National Park or in the Banff and Canmore area? Any "must do" XC ski areas?

If you're looking to ski for free, avoid this place:

albertaparks.ca/canmore-nordic-centre.aspx

If you're looking for the best XC skiing in the area, go here:

albertaparks.ca/canmore-nordic-centre.aspx

Don't forget that Banff Park has a general admission fee of its own.

Thank you. We will plan on some time at the Nordic Center. But we are wondering if there are additional fees for other locations- like Lake Louise, the Moraine Lake Road and the Spray River trail, for example. I think we will purchase the season pass for the National Parks, since there will be four of us. Will that cover the skiing and ice skating as well?

Other than the Nordic Centre trail fee, the national parks entrance fee (and of course lift passes for downhill skiing), all trails are free to use. Ice skating too, I think. Overnight on the trails, that's another story.

Trails like the ones you mentioned will be "wild", not machine groomed, but they probably will have a single set of ski tracks from previous skiers - unless you're the first to arrive after a snowfall of course. There will be avalanche risk; check before you go.

As mentioned, other than the national park entry fee, using the trails there has no cost. Here is a link to the BNP "Winter Trails" brochure and webpage, which lists where to find track-set trails for cross-country skiing. pc.gc.ca/eng/…hivernales-wintertrails.aspx Some are track-set with just one or two lanes for classic; others have a skating lane.

For avalanche risk, check the Canadian Avalanche Centre:

The Spray and Moraine Lake road will definitely be machine groomed, although not frequently. But, as krp mentions, you can easily find out from Parks Canada the date of most recent grooming for each trail. Another groomed favourite of locals is the Cascade fire road -- the start is at the Lake Minnewanka parking lot.
