Weather - Rain All Month?

We are coming this coming week and the weather forecast has a lot of rain. However, I've noticed this past month rain has been in the forecast almost everyday. I checked the averages and July only has around 2inches annually so have these showers been very light for a short period of time or are they all day showers?

Alberta is currently experincing more rain than normal, with many heavy downpours.

Some areas of the province are getting 5 or 6 times as much rain as normal this year

We're headed there this coming week as well and hope we don't get rained out on everything we want to do!

While the southern part of the province has certainly been deluged with rain, some areas of the province - such as the Rockies around Jasper - have been much drier than normal - in drought conditions, in fact - so we are now thankful to be getting some rain so as to lower the forest fire danger. Here is a news story from the Jasper local paper from earlier in the spring: fitzhugh.ca/news/842-arid-horizon-jasper-fac…

June is statistically our rainest month of the year here in the mountains, and we had almost no rain here in Jasper in June. The fire hazard sat at "extreme" through most of the month, which normally isn't seen until late July or August, after we've had a few weeks of hot, dry weather.

Banff has been wetter than Jasper though - there were a few spring storms that brought late snowfalls and a lot of rain; these did not affect us here in Jasper.

Dislover, to answer your questions, while it is possible to get days where it is all socked in and rain falls all or most of the day (we had a day like that here in Jasper a couple of days ago, and up at higher elevations, it was snowing rather than raining), it is more common to get sporadic showers. A common weather pattern in the mountains is a clear morning, gathering clouds through the day and then a shower or two in the late afternoon or evening, then clearing in the evening. My advice is to pack some rain gear so that you are prepared for anything, and get out an enjoy the mountains!

We will be in Banff from Sunday 7/18 to Sunday 7/24 as well! I am really hoping we don get rained out the whole time. But, it doesnt look good and we seem to have really bad luck with rain on vacations the last few years. How about picture opportunities when its raining? Does the rain pretty much kill visibility?

Quite often we have spectacular skies on rainy days -- blue in one area, black and white clouds in another, maybe a rainbow. You could really luck out for photos!

Please remember =-- when they say a 40% chance of rain - that means SOME rain in 40% of the places covered by the forecast. That's all. Today, for example it rained for 5 minutes on us while we were near Marble Canyon and it rained for 5 minutes while we hiked Castle Lookout. So, yes, there was rain today. And tomorrow as well probably.

But all day rains are very rare in our experience. That;s why the talk about the "changeable weather of the Rockies."

Oh, and the first rule of a rainy day in the Mountain Parks -- put on your rainsuit and hike to a waterfall.

Priceless.
