august meteor showers

We will be in the town of Banff on Aug 12 which coincides with the Perseid meteor showers. Can anyone suggest a dark location for viewing?

You could take a blanket or lawn chairs out to Vermilion Lakes or to the far end of the recreation grounds or to Cascade Ponds.

An astronomer friend of mine likes to use a gravel pit off the 1A highway, somewhere past Banff.

Have a drive to Lake Minnewanka it's about 15 min from town, it's a great place also to see Northern lights !

Another vote for Lake Minnewanka. I saw the Northern Lights there in March. Its close to town and pretty dark. If you setup on the dam wall you have a great view of the sky.

Thank you for all the suggestions. Probably will need mosquito repellent near the lakes, huh?

Another thought - we don't mind driving a bit. Are there any dark but open spots at higher elevations near Banff?

You could drive to Lake Louise (at 5600 feet, or Moraine Lake, at almost 6200 feet). It would be less than an hour's drive from Banff. If you really want to get up higher, I'd suggest going about 35 km further, up the Icefields Parkway to Bow Lake or to the Bow Summit look-out, which is at almost 7000 feet. You probably wouldn't need mosquito repellent there, but you would need a warm jacket - it can get pretty cool at night.
