Place to stay in Calgary

Hello

I am flying to Calgary on Sept 2. I arrive around 11am. I am planning on renting a car and staying at the Johnson Canyon Resort Sept 2-5, then flying back to Denver on Sept 6. My flight leaves at 11:15.

Any suggestions on where to stay in Calgary? I'm looking for a bduget motel/hotel, perhaps with a hot tub. I was planning on checking out the Olympic Park on my way up to Johnson Canyon on Sept.2. I would like to see something of the city of Calgary if at all possible, maybe the Tower? Not sure if I'll have enough time though. Would it be worthwhile? Should I just get a place near the airport?

Also, I've seen mixed reviews of the Snocat Glacier tour. I don't like crowds so I'm thinking I should just plan on driving to the Athabasca Glacier myself.

One last item, I do have a United States driver's license-do I need anything else to drive a car? I know the speed limit will be in km-any other differences? This is the first time I'll be driving outside the the US.

Thanks much. I can't wait to go. I'm sure it's much prettier than our Rocky Mts here in Colorado.

Hey!

I just stayed at a Best Western just off downtown Calgary in a suite that ran just $149 for a perfectly decent, large suite with hot tub in the bedroom and a quaint modern kitchen as well. It was on 12th Avenue and 8th Street, I believe...there are a lot of Best Westerns in Calgary of course but this one was in a really good location (lots of excellent shopping and nightlife on 17th-- where all the cool people go).

The Best Western that jasperraven mentioned IS in a great location for someone who is going to spend any length of time in Calgary. As jasperraven said, nearby 17th Avenue is a good place to find restaurants, etc.

However, denvergator, since I recommend that you use Calgary only as a place in which to sleep the night before you fly out, I believe you would be better off staying in the northeast quadrant, where the airport is located.

You can do an Internet search for AIRPORT HOTEL + CALGARY. The hotels that come up will have street addresses that end in NE (to denote the northeast quadrant of the city), and many of them also will have the word "hotel" in their names. Note that there is only one hotel that is actually inside the airport complex, and that is the Delta Calgary Airport Hotel.

Once you have a list, it's a matter of sorting the list by price. Once you have a short list, I suggest you read the TripAdvisor reviews for the relevant properties.

The Greenwood Inn is a good hotel. It is not cheap, but it's not in the upper price bracket either. It gives good value for money.

If you want a hotel that is less expensive than the Greenwood, there are several options, such as the Travelodge Hotel Calgary Airport, etc.

Hope that helps.
