Here's an excerpt from the Fairmont Lake Louise's Fact Sheet:

"Parking

The Chateau contains a covered parade. Valet parking or self parking is available to our guests at a daily rate of $35 with unlimited access. Self parking is $33 per day."

Wow, that might be a world record price for parking.

There's a huge, free public parking lot very close to the hotel.

Actually that's a pretty standard price for parking in Banff/Lake Louise hotels as well as downtown hotels in Calgary. Not a world record at all.

Apparently Calgary parking is the second priciest in North America, after New York:

Just a note that quite a few Banff hotels provide onsite parking for their guests at no extra charge. The Fox, for example, has heated, underground parking for guests at no extra charge.

Are we allowed to park in the public parking lot overnight?

I believe so - as long as you have the normal park pass and aren't actually sleeping in the vehicle, that is. Those things they get cranky about, but overnight parking is generally okay.

Out of interest, I phoned Parks Canada and the official word is:

"No, there is no overnight parking in the Lake Louise parking lot." Otherwise, every single guest from the hotel would be parking there. If you are a hotel guest at this luxury hotel, you need to park and pay to stay at the hotel. The lone exception seems to be for Backcountry users. That is, for people who are overnighting at backcountry campgrounds that are accessible from the Lake Louise trail head. I hope this helps clarify!
