Even though both cities are a million population, there is no passenger train service between Calgary and Edmonton. Besides flying and the usual Greyhound bus service, there's a luxury coach: www.redarrow.ca

Strange as it may seem, the Red Arrow bus that ABtraveller mentioned, may be a better alternative than flying.

The bus is considerably cheaper than flying. It is a comfortable bus and has complimentary snacks on board.

Because the bus travels from one downtown core to the other, in some ways it's less hassle than using the two cities' airports.

By the way, if you were to add taxi fares to and from the airports, it would make for an even bigger price difference between the Red Arrow bus and flying. In the case of Edmonton, the airport is an especially long distance from the downtown core.

IF the flight is on time, the bus option takes about 15 minutes more than flying, if you add taxi time, and count travel time from door to door. However, flight delays are not unknown. In the event of an airport or airline glitch, the bus actually is faster.

But I'm surprised that you're not driving. There is a good, four-lane, divided highway between Calgary and Edmonton, and the road is fairly flat and straight. It is really, really easy to drive, even for someone who is used to having the steering wheel on the right hand side of the vehicle.

Western Canada is a very car-oriented environment. Only right in Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton is public transportation coverage good. Once you leave the major cities, the public transportation infrastructure is nothing like what you're used to in Europe.
