Where to stay for an afternoon visit?

In the summer we fly into Calgary around 1-pm. We'd like to do a little sight-seeing and a decent (doesn't have to be fancy) dinner. Should we stay downtown, or near the airport? Or does it really matter in terms of distance and quick sights to visit? We will have a rental car.

Since you will have a car, your best bet is probably a hotel on the west side of the city, so that you can get a head start the next day and not drive through city traffic. Those hotels are also close to Canada Olympic Park (Winsport), location of Canada's Sports Hall of Fame, and numerous summer and winter sports, from skiing and snowboarding to mini-golf, ziplining, and the Skyline Luge (summer luge run for novices using wheeled sleds). West side hotels close to the Trans-Canada Hwy (Hwy 1, aka 16 Ave N) include Sandman Hotel & Suites Calgary West, Four Points by Sheraton Calgary West, Centro Motel, Days Inn Calgary Northwest, and Best Western Village Park Inn.
