Middling. There are better and worse locations. If you plan to drive yourself, then you should leave the hotel so that you arrive before the start of the day's events (11:00 am for most days, earlier for seniors' day, family day) in order to be able to find parking. Budget $15-$30 for parking, depending on how close you want to park to Stampede Park.

Your second option is to take a Calgary Transit bus to Stampede Park. This is $3 per adult one way. Unfortunately, since Grey Eagle is not inside the city limits, the nearest bus stop is nearly a mile's walk from the hotel.

Finally, you can drive to the nearest LRT (tram line) station, park there, and take the tram to Stampede Park. That is also $3 per adult one way, and depending on when you go, there may not be parking available. If you take the tram, you will have to change trams on 7th Ave S in downtown, for a Somerset / Bridlewood (Rte 201) tram to get to Stampede Park, or walk from the nearest downtown stop, at Olympic Plaza or City Hall.

If you want some other suggestions on better hotel locations for Stampede, have a look at the list near the end of this TripAdvisor Traveller Article, "Stampede for First-Time Visitors":

Yes and it is still quite a walk to get from the where the hotel is situated to the nearest bus stop, countrywife was quite right in her comment.

The point that I was trying to make is that Grey Eagle is outside the city limits, and Calgary Transit buses don't go outside the city limits:

http://fsmap.cocnmp.com/?redirect=/fsmap

My quick Google Maps search seemed to show that the closest bus stop was on 37th Street north of Glenmore Trail. After a closer look, I see that there is a bus stop at Lakeview Dr SE near 37 St which is much closer, but it still is roughly 700m from the hotel. The buses stopping there are the Rte 18 - Lakeview (which does not stop there after 7 pm); Rte 63 - Lakeview Express (which only runs a few buses during morning and afternoon rush hour); and Rte 47 - Lakeview/Chinook Station, which runs all day. Depending on the time of day, it's 20 to 45 mins between Rte 47 buses and then it's a 20 minute ride to Chinook Station, where you can catch the C-Train (tram) to the Stampede: www.calgarytransit.com/route_maps/rte047.html

So, if Paula doesn't mind walking roughly 700 m to the nearest bus stop (and back to the hotel from the bus stop at the end of the day), and she makes sure to check the bus schedule so that the wait isn't too long, then the Rte 47 seems to be not a bad bet. And that will teach me to trust Google Maps for transit route information!

Country Wife is correct. Grey Eagle is not on city land and not technically within city limits, therefore not directly serviced by Calgary transit.

If you will be renting a car then the Grey Eagle may work fine for you, but if you are relying on public transit there are more convenient places to stay.

Dtgcalgary,

I agree that my first response could have been clearer. However, Grey Eagle is not within the City of Calgary. Please see the first link that I posted in response #4; it's to an official City of Calgary map that shows that the city limits in that area are north of Glenmore Trail and east of 37 St W. That's why the city smoking bylaws don't apply - the Grey Eagle casino and the resort hotel are not within the city boundaries. No Calgary bylaws apply on Tsuu T'ina (Sarcee) land, any more than they would apply in Bragg Creek or Cochrane.

I agree that there are many hotels that are more conveniently located to the Stampede, and provided a link to a list of them in response #1.

Dtg - you are the one who keeps arguing this point, give it up.

FYI, some of us have lived here way longer than you.

dtgCalgary, you're funny when you get up a head of steam over an inconsequential, meaningless detail, but since you're so fired up then please offer a general apology to the board by admitting that you are dead wrong.

The Tsuu T'ina Nation of which I am a proud non treaty member IS NOT IN CALGARY!

For crying out loud, look on a map...

Cheers,

Terry
