Driving Calgary to Edmonton - Hotel/Resorts along the way??

Any recommendations for someone driving from Calgary to Edmonton ? Staying mostly in Calgary for the week-end, but might need to head to Edmonton for a Tuesday meeting.

Would expect only to stay the 1 night.. and drive back to Calgary afterwards.

Don't know if i should head into the city ? Would love to stay at a resort along the way.. 1/2 .. or more.. Any advise ? or anything around ?

Thanks.

There are no resorts between Calgary and Edmonton, unless you count Sylvan Lake. Fantasyland Hotel in Edmonton might be considered a resort.

So if you were given an option to spend 2 days in Canmore/Banff on you own dime... or the option to drive to Edmonton for a 1 hr meeting and have 2 days worth of travel/expenses/time paid... would you then opt for Banff...?? since there is no comparison between the two- to ppl who have nevr been to either.

Priority really is to enjoy my time out there.. but thought i could possibly mix the 2 since if i hit this meeting the paid xpenses are a bonus.

I'm assuming doing both in 3 days is just too much driving.. since you need to go back to Calgary from Banff to get to Edmonton ?

Any dvise ?? Thanks in advance.

Unless budgeting is a concern, I would say without any hesitation.... head for the hills ! I would assume that from your photo, you're a golf nut. Banff / Canmore have some absolutely fantastic courses. The Canmore G&CC course is great, beautiful, in town, and inexpensive. Having lived in Edmonton for several years, I can objectively say that it is not a particularly beautiful / vibrant / interesting city. It's nice....in a Winnipeg kind of way.

Let the self righteous indignation begin....

LOL! Well, Edmtonton and Winnipeg are both rather bland, sprawling prairie cities with rivers running through them, and that have bitter cold winter weather... I think the comparison is an apt one.

Which reminds me... concordia, what time of year is this trip?

You might want to use google maps to assess your options and look at the driving times (using the "get directions" feature). Edmonton to Banff is about a 5 hour drive, via Calgary. Another option, which would have you seeing more of the mountains and driving part of the beautiful Icefields Parkway - instead of driving all the way back to Calgary, turn off highway 2 at hwy 12 (Lacombe) to Rocky Mountain House, then highway 11 to #93. This is about a 7 hour drive but much more scenic. I wouldn't suggest this in winter though, as it would likely be much longer.

The mountains win over Edmonton any day; any time. No question, use your extra time and go to Banff.

Although I'm an Edmontonian who grew up in Winnipeg (lol!!), I will spare you all the self-righteous indignation and vote wholeheartedly in favour of the Banff/Canmore +/or Icefields plan. Even if it is on your own dime, with extra driving. Absolutely. :)

LOL.. have to love the fact ppl are stepping up to save their city.

Imagine how close to the exact same they will be if they get their Jets back.

Appreciate the feedback... dates are scheduled for March 21-22.

I'm thinking a beautiful drive through the rockies could still be tough at that time.. and 7 hrs would entirely be a conservative estimate.

Not being an Edmonton native, but moved here for work. Also, can definitely say Edmonton is much nicer than Winnipeg. Given all that, it really is your choice between mountain region and Edmonton. Personally, I would take the mountain drive, and if I had the reserve cash would head for Banff for time there.

Stay at that new casino/hotel that just opened in canmore. my friend said it was very nice. remember if you stay in the parks, you have to pay the park fee ontop of any hotel fee. canmore there is no park fee and you still get the mountains
