Columbia Icefield

We will be visiting the Columbia Icefield in June. Is it possible to actually walk out on the ice without taking a tour? We would like to park our car and then walk out.

NO. Glacier travel has many hazards, and it is unsafe to walk onto the ice without either going onto a specially-prepared area (as with the glacier bus) or without a skilled guide and some basic climbing equipment (as with the Ice Walk). No tourists have died recently by falling into a crevasse or an uncontrolled fall on the icy slopes, and we'd really like to keep it that way.

In the summer there is a trail that leads to the toe of the glacier, but NOT onto the ice itself. This trail near the glacier gives you an up-close view of the ice, and allows you to walk over the moraines where the glacier once traveled. It can be found at the parking lot directly across the highway from the Glacier Discovery Centre

Sunwapta Lake is accessible from the parking area at the "Toe of the Glacier" road. Sunwapta Lake is the glacial meltwater lake right at the toe of the glacier.

Despite the fearful response by country_wife, the answer to the OPs question is actually yes, provided you are prepared, understand the risks and have done the requisite planning. It will all depend on how much walking you want to do on the glacier.
