thanks all - great info. Wife is now suggesting maybe better to drive from Vancouver to Banff - scenery appears to be the same via road or train, only difference is we wont get the "train experience". We are not train nuts so that does not bother us.

Now we'd better know what month you are considering. Your ease of travel and enjoyment will depend on that.

The Rockies are just starting to think about winter at that time. You might lightly consider starting in Calgary and ending up in Vancouver where it will still be autumn. But not overly necessary due to weather.

Certainly it can be getting cool in the Rockies in mid-September, especially at night. It's possible to have had frost (below freezing weather) by mid-September in Jasper (town), likely Banff too (maybe even more likely, since Banff is 300 metres higher than Jasper), although it is usually later than that. But at higher elevations, snow does sometimes start to collect around mid-September, although later September or early October is more typical. But September can also bring warm, sunny weather ... I had friends married here in Jasper on Sept. 24th a couple of years ago, and it was 27C that day !! (but 15 to 20C would be more "normal") However, two days later, I was hiking at Wilcox Pass, in a windy snowstorm barely above freezing.

But I do agree with mufti ... for an autumn visit, for a better chance of warmer weather, it's best to start in the Rockies and then head to the coast.
