Jasper to Vancouver

Hi,

Our family of 4 ( teenagers 15 and 13 and two adults) are travelling to Banff (3 nights) and Jasper (2 nights) in late June and then going to Vancouver. We will have a hire car. We were wondering if we should take the drive to Vancouver over 2 days and stop off somewhere overnight. Does anyone have any suggestions of where and which way we should get to Vancouver?

Thanks

Hi Jane, welcome to the forums ~

You might find these Trip Reports from the Canadian Rockies Forum helpful. They are routes and activities that previous visitors have left behind to help others plan their trips.

and from the BC Forum:

The Okanagan Valley is a popular place to stop over for a night. As you will be travelling on Canada Day, July 1st, reservations for accommodations will be a must, and somewhat in advance. School's out for the summer on June 29th or so. The Okanagan Valley stretches from Vernon in the north to Osoyoos in the south, with Kelowna being the most popular city and Penticton being quieter and slightly away from the highway to Vancouver but a nice small city. This area works well if coming from Banff.

But you may be coming down Hwy 16/5 from Jasper, in which case many people stop over at Clearwater and then straight through to Vancouver from there. And yes, it's an 8-9 hour drive from Jasper to Vancouver so stopping for one night is a good idea. Otherwise you won't have time to stop and visit points of interest.

In fact, if you wanted to post your itinerary, a number of regulars here could optimize your time and driving distances.

While it is doable in one long driving day, most people break it into at least two days, and there is certainly enough of interest to make it worth taking longer if you can.

As for routing, the most obvious is to head west from Jasper on highway 16 and then south on highway 5, with the overnight stop most commonly taken in Clearwater. However, having done trips back and forth to the Rockies over the past few years, I am quite outspoken in my strong preference for Highway 1 through Revelstoke. This means taking a return trip on the Icefields Parkway, which is very much worth seeing twice, IMO.

HI all,

Ok we arrive in Banff on June 25th and stay in Banff for 3 nights and then move to Jasper for 2 nights 28th and 29th. We have to be in Vancouver for a flight at 4:35pm on 1 July and wondered were we should stay on the 30th ie which route do we take from Jasper to Vancouver?

We know there is a lot to see in Banff and Jasper including the Icefields Parkway etc but is there anything we should not miss? Or any recommendations?

Thanks

It would really be best to be back in Vancouver the night before your flight out. It is Canada Day on July 1st and a VERY busy time of year. School's out for the summer on the 29th June, many families are on the roads starting their holidays. Accommodations will need to be reserved well in advance.

It takes 9 hours to drive from the Rockies to Vancouver, usually done over 2 days. If you are going to drive, and working backwards, you will need to be at the airport to drop the car, check in, security, customs approx 4 hours before your departure time, so about 12-12h30 on the 1st. This means you will want to spend the night before in perhaps Hope, BC. That is about 2 hours from the airport, in light traffic. The next closest place to stay the night would be Merritt, which would be 3 hours, or Kamloops which would be 4 hours from the airport.

My recommendation is finish your time in the Rockies, make your way to Calgary and fly to Vancouver, late afternoon of the 30th, 1.5 hours, flights leave every hour on Air Canada or WestJet so that you can be positioned for your flight on the 1st July. Stay at a hotel near the airport for convenience. IMO, you need to allow some flex time for any eventuality that might happen: car breakdown, flat tire, other drivers' traffic crashes that might hold you up more than you might want.

The must sees in the Rockies and on the Icefields Parkway can be read about in one of the Top Questions on the Banff forum:

And the Icefields Parkway points of interest, attractions and activities can be seen in the following link. Please open the PDF link to be found just underneath the map image you will see:
