Why was I given dirty looks on the Skytrain?

Okay, this is a long story, but basically me and my friend (both political junkies) were on the Skytrain riding from the hotel to the city center (we were both on vacation in the west coast from New York city), when all of a sudden he discussed about politics and Ronald Reagan. I then said that Reagan once had a good friend in Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, one of Canada's greater prime ministers.

When I said that, some people on the skytrain gave me a weird stare, and it was very embarassing.

Why is that?

I'm no polical junky, but Mulroney has been the subject of much controversy, some recent. Wikipedia covers several: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_Mulroney

Note: this subject is not travel, so is likely to be closed.
