Jasper - Clearwater - Chilliwack

We are having a 12 night trip in Jul/Aug, flying into Calgary and out of Vancouver, so far have got 3 ngihts Banff, 3 nights Jasper and our last 3 nights in Vancouver. We were thinking of travelling from Jasper to Clearwater for 1 night and then onto Chilliwack for 2 nights (found a nice B&B overlooking river) before heading into the city.

Would appreciate any comments on whether this is a good idea or any better suggestions. Want to break journey down into manageable drives and thought Chilliwack looked a good place to relax before hitting the city?

Any help appreciated there seems to be so many options without knowing the area its hard to make a choice.

Hmmm. Ok, why Chilliwack? Is there something there that appeals to you? Its a rural agricultural community without a lot of tourism. Personally, I'd suggest you check out Harrison Hot Springs, which is in the same area, but more of a tourism destination. Its a very quiet place without a lot going on, but very pretty. The B&B you've chosen may also be very pretty, so you could be fine with that.

I'd be inclined to switch your nights though - 2 in Clearwater and 1 in Chilliwack/HHS. This will allow you a full day to visit Wells Gray Provincial Park, which is a lovely place and worth a day.

I agree wholeheartedly. This is very good advice. You will find Wells Grey and the surrounding area very interesting and scenic. You will just regret only having two nights to spend there. Check out: http://www.wellsgray.ca/site/galleries.html .

I like Chilliwack. It's a town that has an established downtown center but has spread out seemingly randomly fairly far and wide. The best lunch spots, IMO are the golf course restaurants. Is your B&B overlooking the Fraser River or the Chilliwack River? If it's the Chilliwack, you could do a driving tour through Cultus Lake, a mecca for summer cottages, probably all year homes now, because of the lake. There is also Minter Gardens out there. Luckakuck Road has a number of restaurants: Earl's, Ric's Grill, Mr. Mike's Steakhouse. In town you will find Rustico's on Main St, whose prices seemed quite high, for lunch anyway, but you might find it quite nice for dinner. Also downtown is Bravo, but I have not tried the meals there. Except for the downtown area, you do have to drive almost everywhere.

The location is in the Fraser (River) Valley and will seem like a wide plain with mountains surrounding all of it: the farms, cows and crops.

And I would vote also for 2 nights Clearwater.

Believe it or not, the Chilliwack airport is a destination for food. Its plain home cooking on the menu, but there's often a line up and people fly in from all over to have lunch there. The pie is the signature item.

Thanks for your response. The B&B we fancied is on the Fraser River, does this make a difference?

No, just a little more driving to go to Cultus. Depending on where the B&B is, the Fraser would be quite interesting around there, a number of sand bars and islands dotted around, interesting channel pattern and the Harrison River comes down into the Fraser right about there. Many sloughs that crisscross the Chilliwack area. Hardly seems like the same river that forks into the North Arm and the South Arm at the coast.

Thanks very much for all the advice. We have now decided on 2 nights Clearwater and 1 Chilliwack. So our trip is now 3 nights Canmore/Banff, 3 Jasper, 2 Clearwater, 1 Chilliwack & 3 Vancouver.

Really excited, I realise that we can't see everything in this short a time but any advice or suggestions about what we must not miss would be appreciated.

Thanks

Sounds good. Depending on your interests and what you want to see and do, you could shift through the following ideas for Vancouver:

VANCOUVER DOWNTOWN:

Stanley Park, including the Aquarium

Gastown - for a self guided walking tour: http://www.gastown.org/history/index.html --> take a self guided walking tour. Otherwise this historic birthplace of Vancouver will just be brick and stone to you.

Chinatown

Robson Street

Bill Reid Gallery at 639 Hornby St. between Dunsmuir and Georgia

Vancouver Art Gallery, with its great Gallery Café

The Marine Building at 355 Burrard St. for the exterior, facade, entrance, foyer and the inside of the brass-doored elevators. Notice the marine and ship themes. Office hours only.

NORTH SHORE:

Grouse Mountain

Lynn Canyon Susp Bridge (free)

Capilano Susp Bridge ($$$)

*************

SOUTH SIDE OF FALSE CREEK

Granville Island and False Creek

Maritime Museum - www.vancouvermaritimemuseum.com/page216.htm

Van Dusen Gardens

Queen Elizabeth Park and the Bloedel Conservatory

**********

4 Self Guided walks - vancouver.ca/commsvcs/…index.htm

**********

Museum of Anthropology at UBC

Nitobe Memorial Gardens at UBC - http://www.botanicalgarden.ubc.ca/nitobe

Greenheart Canopy Walkway at UBC Botanical Gardens –

OUTLYING REGIONS:

Fort Langley http://www.fortlangley.com/

I've included Ft Langley because if you are going to be in Chilliwack you might want to consider an hour there.

On this map, best to zoom at Balloon B to get the driving details for accessing the highway afterwards for continuing westbound, if you decide to go there.
