RV trip in BC in August

Hi, we are travelling from the UK in August to get married in Vancouver. After the wedding, as we are travelling with friends and our children, we plan on hiring RVs and going on a road trip for around 7-10 days. I quite like the idea of touring Vancouver Island, but am open to other ideas. Can anyone please recommend any reliable, and preferably affordable, rental companies, and any family friendly RV parks either on the Island or within a few hours of Vancouver? Any other tips also welcome. Thank you.

Hi anna bee and welcome to TA,

I can't contribute much to your plans except to advise that you take out an annual policy with www.insurance4carhire.co.uk whom I regularly recommend to UK visitors (only available to us). This covers the excess (CDW) provided the policy and the hirer are in the same name, when it also covers other named drivers on the rental (hire) agreement.

I'm sure the DEs (Destination Experts) will join in with very sound advice soon. The only downside in your plans is that you don't appear to have the time to include the Rockies.

Vancouver Island is a great destination for a short RV trip. You might consider including the Sunshine Coast in your itinerary.

Unfortunetaly, August is an expensive month for RV renting, being the height of the summer season, but you could still find some good offers on:

www.campertravelcanada.com

www.rvrentalsalefindercanada.com

You could also try at Four Seasons RV Rental. They are linked with Fraserway.

After about three years Fraserway replaces its units and part of them go to Four Seasons for one or two more rental years at lower rates.

Vancouver Island is a great idea! But very, very popular, so you need to get your campsites booked well in advance (like, February).

There are two main categories of campgrounds: government and private.

In general, the government campgrounds are within parks, the sites are well spaced out and treed, but there are no services at each site. You have to walk to a common spigot to get water and there is a common washroom block or only pit toilets in some campgrounds. Usually there is no electricity, or only a few outlets in the washroom. These park sites are usually very popular and fill on the day that reservations open, or shortly afterwards.

Private campgrounds tend to be much smaller, tighter spaces, but with services like power, water and sewer right at your site (collectively called "hookups"), and often there are other facilities like a games room, internet access and a swimming pool.

I would suggest that you plan a balance of private and government run sites to experience the best of both.

I would start by looking at the BC Parks and National Parks websites. Popular destinations include Pacific Rim, Telegraph Cove, and the islands on the eastern side of Vancouver Island, and the Sunshine Coast as mentioned above.

Take a shot at putting a rough itinerary together and post it here. You will probably get better, more precise help when we have something specific to chew on.

If you are set on the Island ok...can't help there. Not a big fan of the Island...sorry. Ad others have said go to the BC Parks web site to see all Public sites, then book when u can via "discover camping" web site.

Lots of Germans love the RV tour a well...just don't mention anything about the War....

Use this website for Provincial campgrounds: https://secure.camis.com/Discovercamping They are described by Vancouverite above. You can choose campgrounds on the Island as well as the rest of BC. Some campgrounds are first come first serve and no reservations.August is a busy time in BC so planning ahead where you wish to travel and booking campsites are your best bet.

You didn't mention how old your children are, so it's difficult to make kid-friendly recommendations. However, both Vancouver Island and the Okanagan area of BC are great for kids of all ages.

If you do a little research and decide where you would like to do your road trip, then we can all help more.
