The rental car scheme used for bilking customers, preferably foreign tourists as for them it is difficult to defent themselves (see tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g154943-i81-k58820…
has apparently been copied 1:1 by National rent a car. We had a voucher from Holiday Auto Switzerland (daughter company of Holiday Auto) for a car rental with National Vancouver Island, with a drop-off in Victoria with a confirmed drop-off fee of CAD 199,99 and with all insurance cover. As in Victoria airport you leave the car in an unattended lot and it is not checked in your presence, we reported a tiny stone chip in the windshield to the desk clerk when we returned the keys and he tried to call Campbell River where we had taken over the car from. As he could not reach them he confirmed our insurance cover on the voucher and kept our copy of the rental contract (!!??!!) as well as the voucher.
One week after the car has been returned, we had a credit charge of CAD 500.00 and three days after this another one of CAD 1'000.00 - unjustified and no communication. All our 6 complaints to National got only an automated reply - when Holiday Auto tried to retrace this, they where told that the rental had been a no-show (they did not even miss the car we have been driving 2 1/2 weeks!). BetterBusinessBureau sent us the link regarding the fraud used by Budget cbc.ca/news/…bc-budget-rental-fraud.html and this made us take other actions, so we copied everything and sent a fax - which finally got us an anwer:
The CAD 1'000.00 is a drop-off fee (instead of the one confirmed on the voucher of CAD 199.00) and to justify this, they sent a copy of our signed rental contract (the one the clerk took from us in Victoria), showing the 1'000.00 drop-off fee - but unfortunately clearly written in another handwriting than the rest and with another pen, so obvisously AFTER we had signed it.
The CAD 500.00 they justify with the tiny chip we reported upon return - ridiculous and copy paste from Budget's scam.
It is sad that companies are using such fraudulent procedures on tourists. We love Vancouver Island and dreamed of being back there ech year for our holidays - but this is not the holiday memory we are after. We still hope to sometimes get National to take care of this!
