Third Time's Charm?Vancouver-Nanaimo Foot Ferry

I personally just don't see it given how thin crowds have been on the ferries of late but I've been wrong before.

I heard about this on the news the other day. Heck, I'd like to see local commuter ferries that cover West Van, Richmond, Port Moody, Deep Cove and downtown for a start. But its always good to have options for people.

I can't remember the one way fare from the last failed attempt, but I think it was set for fairly deep pockets. Time will tell.

The fare for the last version, HarbourLynx, was $25 each way. Affordable for many. Unfortunately it was the wrong type of vessel, too large and costly to operate.

Fingers crossed for this third attempt. Having a high speed foot ferry to Vancouver would make a world of difference to those living in the mid Island area. Great for visitors to our community as well!

Add in the new 4 diamond hotel, with 70K+ annual visitors from China, that Nanaimo City Council recently approved a development permit plan for, and you've got the beginnings of a new metropolis in BC!

Where will it be built? the article doesn't say.

The ripple effect may create a lot of jobs - for newly needed infrastructure, services, city staff.

Interesting article, also talking about a potential 4 storey multi family condo building called Port Place.

The building site is on Gordon Street next to the Vancouver Island Conference Centre, Nanaimo Museum, Port Theatre, Port Place Shopping Centre, Nanaimo Casino and a stone's throw from the Boat Basin. All Downtown.

The condo would be built on the Port Place Shopping Centre lands. Cameron Island housing development is across the street.

Who knows, maybe this is the development that makes it all work for the Downtown?

376 passengers. Pretty impressive. Shades of the fast ferries a bit though, except these are prettier.
