From Vancouver 7 day tour of Rockies

We are planning a visit for our 25th wedding anniversary Sept 2014. Looking at an Alaskan cruise from Vancouver, a week driving around ROckies before flying to London Ontario to see relatives. We have no idea on distance and what we could achieve in a week so any idea. Would love to go to Lake Louise, Banff but is that too far? I guess we need to end up back in Vancouver to fly to London or Toronto. Have romantic idea of staying in log cabin on lake for few nights. Any ideas?

You can get through the Rockies no problem with your timeline, it's just going to feel a bit rushed because the scenery is so spectacular that more time is always wanted....

I hope that you are considering the beginning of September, because the Alaska cruises start to wind back mid September as the weather tends to deteriorate. As mentioned above, you could get to the Rockies in that time frame, but would not have much time too see/do much. Consider flying from Vancouver to Calgary then renting a car to tour the Rockies, then fly from Calgary to London ON. It would appear that WestJet fly that route direct.

The Rockies are in the next time zone from Vancouver. Its a long way.

Banff is only two hours from Calgary, so this is the best airport from which to see the Rockies. A minimum of five days is usually recommended for seeing Banff and Jasper (although one poster did say he'd had enough after four days...I guess mountains aren't really his thing), and you could easily spend all seven days in this area.

People do go overland from Vancouver, although its usually recommended that 10 to 14 days is needed to do a loop, 8 days is best for a one-way trip to Calgary. Personally, I'd spend a day or two around Vancouver and then fly to Calgary and spend 5-6 days in the Rockies from there.

you could easily take the overnite Via Rail train To Jasper from Vancouver. Then rent a car returning to Calgary. You'd have a drop fee but logistically it works out really easy or just fly in and out of Calgary. Really easy to do.

Tina D,

I suggest you use Google Maps to familiarize yourself with the distances you're playing with. What you want to do is possible, but fast-paced, so make sure you know what you're up against.

The Rockies themselves are the mountain range along the BC-Alberta border. The highlight is the area covered by the national parks of Yoho, Kootenay, Banff, and Jasper, which includes the towns of Banff and Jasper and the village of Lake Louise. Any of those locations is about 8.5-9 hours of driving from Vancouver, not including stops or delays.

Glacier and Revelstoke National Parks, and Wells Grey Provincial Park, are technically in the Columbia Mountains but are comparable with the Rockies, and slightly closer to Vancouver. You could use them as your first/last stops when leaving/returning to Vancouver to shorten what would otherwise be very long driving days.

If you're up for long days and fast-paced travel, you could make a loop something like this http://goo.gl/maps/ba0cP . Again, depending on your endurance and your cruise/flight schedules it may or may not be possible to drive Vancouver-Lake Louise or Jasper-Vancouver in one day, so you might plan overnight stops along the way, but try to plan it out to maximize your time in the Rockies national parks.

You could comfortably spend a week in the Vancouver area. But if your heart is set on the Rockies, +1 for flying Vancouver to Calgary (11 hour, 1000 km drive, 1.5 hour flight) to spend those 7 nights split between Banff and Jasper.

For the record, I agree with flying to Calgary as well -- just pointing out what the driving option entails.
