Winery visits and accommodation

Hello. We are looking to come to the Okanagan region for two or three days in early July.

Does anyone have an opinion as to the best area to stay to make the best of our time, the better area to be based to do some touring. Paticularly to some of the better wineries.

(Anybody have an opinion as to the ones to go to)

Would Kelowna be better? Or Penticton. Or another area?

We are also looking for a higher end hotel or resort to stay at.

Any opinions are appreciated.

With 2 notable exceptions there are no *bad* wineries in the area-no names but by their odd associations ye shall know them(!)

I'd choose Penticton as a base and concentrate on the Golden Mile.

Thank you..

I am looking at either the new wing of the Hotel Eldorado or the Lake Okanagan Resort,.

Any thoughts? Any that you would recommend more?

I absolutely recommend the Eldorado over Lake Okanagan Resort. However, they do not have a beach.

Take a look at the Grand Okanagan Resort or Manteo Beach Resort as well for high-end accomodation.

Kelowna is the largest city (about 100,000 people) in the Okanagan with the most to do in town and a central location for the whole valley. For the major hotels I reproduce this from my post elsewhere in the Kelowna forum:

The Eldorado is the older prestige hotel -- when the Prime Minister came to town some years back they put him up at the El. The Grand is, well, grand. A big luxury hotel downtown. The Manteo is the new kid on the block. The local university puts visitors up there so it is good, professional quality. The restaurant is excellent with a fine view of the lake.

Have a good visit.

Kelowna is great, but there is a special spot in Penticton that I love.

Its actually Naramata and it was called Three mile house, or the Orchard house restaurant. I have not been back in years, but It was the best wine and dine experience I had had in years!! There is also a place called the Country Squire? It was great as well, but not for the picky eater as you order your main course with your reservation and they built the rest of your meal around that choice. Fun!

I hope some Naramata folks can let you know if these places are still around and run by the same people as before.

Thank you so much guys. great info.

We are not really worried about having a beach, living where we do :-)

I think I like the look of the Eldorado over the Grand, Downtown.

Thank you for the wine and dine recommendations also.

Any other not to miss places. Restaurants or wineries?

If you come to Vernon, try this

and eat at the Eclectic Med Restaurant in downtown Vernon. (my fave)

OK.. So you cannot book the Eldorado online.

So I fill out a form for the dates I want and I am told that a rep will contact me immediately..

That was 5 days ago???

Not sure about that one anymore!!

Potcake, The Eldorado is beautiful, as it is a local call for me, I will call them and let them know that a potential customer is concerned. I will let them know that I found out about this problem on Trip Advisor.

It could be a simple problem like a new employee that is not doing the job right.

If you still want to try the El, try them later today via e-mail. I should have rattled their beautiful cage by then! ;)
