Travel advice. Getting on to Highway 4.

Hi, I apologize in advance if this a re-tread of a topic someone else might have already posted.

I'm just trying to figure out the best way to get on to Highway 4 from the Departure Bay ferry terminal and to head out of town. Google Maps and Bing offer some very different directions.

Assuming the ferry drops you off around Brechin Rd and Stewart AVe...Google says to keep going straight down Stewart, hang a right on Townsite, etc until you get onto Hwy 19 and merge onto Hwy 4. It seems to be a bit backwards.

Bing is mentioning to turn right on Stewart Ave/Hwy 19A until you hig Hwy 19 and then merge onto Hwy 4.

Hopefully a local might be able to impart wiser advice than a computer mapping system. Thanks!

One point of view among many:

OPTION 1

Drive off the ferry and south on Stewart about 2 km to Townsite.

Turn west on Townsite for about 2 km which becomes East Wellington (very short)

Turn north on Bowen Road about 2 km to Northfield Road.

Turn west on Northfield Road to Hwy 19.

OPTION 2

Drive off the ferry and south on Stewart about 2 km to Townsite

Turn west on Townsite for 2 blocks and then north onto Hwy 19A

Drive on Hwy 19A (the old Island Highway which some consider nicer than Hwy 19) for about 12 km until you can join Hwy 19.

There is a lot of good signage for all of this.

Both options 1 and 2 given seem the long round about way to me.... we just come off the ferry, stay in the right hand lane. At the lights turn right up Brechin Rd. (It's a hill and I believe there is signage saying Campbell River) Stay in the right lane again. Towards the top of the hill there are lights at Estevan Rd. Go straight through - the next set of lights are jsut a couple hundred feet away. Turn right at that next set of lights onto the Island Hwy.

If you can get into the left lane with all the traffic, do so and turn left at the next lights onto Northfield. Continue directly on Northfield (crossing Bowen Rd at lights) till you get to Hwy 19 and turn right.

If you can't get into the left lane, no big deal, just stay on the Island Hwy until it murges with Hwy 19. You just go through a lot of lights and past all the malls, car dealerships etc.

Once you are on Hwy 19, keep going till you see the signs to exit Hwy 4A (Alberni Hwy) to Port Alberni - it might say Pacific Rim.

We live within 30 seconds of the ferry terminal. I would only go the way IslandWest mentions (sorry Mufti!).

As you exit the ferry there are 4 lanes of traffic. Stay in one of the two right hand lanes. At the traffic light take a sharp right up Brechin Road. Signs indicate Parksville. Keep going up the hill, you will be forced to merge onto Highway 19A (going through the two lights IslandWest mentions).

Then either turn left onto Northfield Road and head towards the Inner Island Highway or continue north and merge onto the same highway in about 10 minutes.

It's OK Mufti - when you live on the Island, you just kind of have to use the route a kazzillion times!
