Pacific Marine Circle Route

How long does it take to drive the Pacific Marine Circle Route? We will be staying in Victoria and want to explore some of the island. The Circle route seems great, we just would like to have an idea of how long it will take so we can time things properly. Thank you!

It is supposed to take 5 hours in total, about 2.5 between Victoria and Pt. Renfrew and the rest from PR across Island to Duncan and down to Victoria. Stops extra.

Here's how Google Maps lays it out, with driving distances and times in the left sidebar.

Hi cpamomma,

Welcome to the Forum! Nanaimo is 45 minutes drive north of the intersection of Highways 18 and 1 (Herd Road) and there are some great things to see and do here (watch the video below).

As SalmonSam and Mufti have noted, it really will take you all day to enjoy this route. The driving will take 5 hours but stopping at Botanical Beach in Port Renfrew is worthy of an hour alone! Have a look at the info below. There are distance guides, ideas of spots to stop at and a video to give you a sense of the things you'll see on the way.

Enjoy your circle drive and come on up to Nanaimo!

I think we will leave early in the morning so we have time to stop and enjoy. We plan to take the side trip to Naniamo. I saw your YouTube post yesterday. That is also where I heard about the Pacific Marine Circle Route. I know this will be a long day, but it really sounds like it will also be a fantastic day. Thanks for your help. Do you have any idea we can expect from the weather at the end of May?

Weather in May can be quite pleasant, although we get a fair bit of rain off and on. Here is last May's statistics, remember that this year could be different. Could be less rain, could rain for the whole month. We never know. The precip is measured in mm and translates to less than 4 inches over the month.

Good to hear! Glad you're coming to Nanaimo. Make note of the things that interest you on that video and have quick gander.

The end of May is usually one of my favourite times of the year. The weather is usually nice, warmish, the kids are still in school and the flowers have all been planted. Tourism businesses are freshened up, eager to serve and the rates are good. Great time to come!

If you change your mind about doing the whole trip in a single day you could break it up with a stay in either Port Renfrew, Lake Cowichan or Nanaimo. Staying in Nanaimo would give you a chance to drive through Yellow Point, Old Chemainus Road, Chemainus, a self-drive tour of the Totem Poles in Duncan and then visit a winery/cidery or cheese shop around Cobble Hill. Most of these other things to do are not realistic to include if you plan on driving the entire PMCR in one day.

Either way you'll have a great day out, get a varied taste of southern and central Vancouver Island and realize you have to come back for more? :-)
