While it is possible you may see whales it is very unlikely to see whales on a kayak day trip from Tofino. The whales are often in more exposed waters that are not conducive to day trips (multi-day trips are more likely to go here).

Where I am located on northern Vancouver Island you are more likely to see orcas or humpback whales on a kayak day trip but even then your chances are about 50% (you can only go so far and back in a few hours). If you were to go on a kayak trip of 3 days or longer the success rate jumps exponentially (during that time the chances are greater the whales will swim past where you are).

In Tofino I would still recommend a kayak day trip, try Tofino Sea Kayaking www.tofino-kayaking.com . You should see lots of wildlife and have a great time, just don't expect whales unless you go by motorized boat.

If seeing whales from a kayak is a priority then travel further north on the island and consider a longer kayak trip. In Port McNeill check out Kingfisher Adventures, www.kingfisher.ca or in Telegraph Cove check with North Island Kayak www.kayakbc.ca .

When will you be on our island?

Timing is everything where wildlife is concerned.

Follow Kingfishers advice. August is whale season out of Telegraph Cove. If you can spend the time look at an overnight tour. The night on the beach can provide some spectacular viewing.
