Driving from Tofino to Nanaimo, what not to miss?

We will be leaving Tofino at around 2:00pm and driving to Nanaimo. We will be able to take our time and sightsee along the way. What should we be sure to stop and see along the way?

I already know to stop at Cathedral Grove and Goats on the Roof. :)

I now know to stop at Little Qualicum Falls as well. Is there anywhere between Tofino & the falls that is worth a stop?

Nice little beaches at Kennedy Lake (just past the junction on Hwy 4 leaving Tofino/Ucluelet), Cameron Lake and Sproat Lake. Love the Mountain View Bakery in Port Alberni - nice place for lunch. Roughly on the corner of Gertrude and Johnson (Port Alberni Hwy) - 4561 Gertrude - you almost pass it on the way through town. Great old-time bakery with a lunch counter.

Good to know about the lakes and we will definitely plan to stop at the Mountain View Bakery. Thanks!

I don't know when you are travelling or where you are from. But if it is in June stop at the bridge over the Sproat River. Just a few yards downstream there is a falls/rapids with a fish-ladder. there you will see Sockeye salmon migrating upstrem into Sproat Lake. If you are traveliing near the end of August or September, a side trip to Stamp Falls Provincial park is mandatory. Thousands of Chinook salmon are migrating to thier spawning grounds. You can see them jumping at the falls, and below in the pools. It is an impressive spectacle!

Rainbirder, we will be doing this drive on Tuesday May 8. Any advice for that time of year?

It worth seeing the Mars Water Bombers at Sproat Lake as well.

And the McLean Mill is a very new National Historic Site, so still under development, but we really enjoyed our visit (however, we got in using our National Parks Annual Pass, so not having to pay the entry fee made it very appealing.) The parts that they have got set up with displays and interpretation are good, and you can see the rest of it will gradually come together.

They have a great bunch of volunteers there and its worth trying to organize your visit so you can actually see them cutting the wood. They still mill wood there and sell it to raise funds for the site.

(PS - I think we see this question often enough that it warrants being posted as a top question...?)
