solo visit for surfing.

What are the waves like during the winter months? And where is the best spot to check out?

Winter sees the biggest waves of the season-follow the crowds.

I'd recommend you contact one of the local surfing shops or Tourism Tofino.

Exactly. Following the crowds is the most low-tech and accurate way to see where the good spots are. Just check along Lynn Road or Chesterman Beach Road for Chesterman Beach or the Cox Bay public lot. Winter waves are better suited to more advanced surfers, but it sounds like you've done this before :) Popular sites to check are Surfline and Magic Seaweed.
